Fourth timer looking to make some shade

Post by Flyerfye » Mon Jul 19, 2010 11:58 am

This year will be my fourth time and each year is better than the last. I'm joining e-playa because I miss all you guys the rest of the year when we are away from home in our various corners of the world but also because I am seeking a little guidance. This year I want to build a structure much like the one featured as Clif's Shade Structure (http://www.toad.com/gnu/clifs-shade-structure.html). I've done some figurin' as to the dimensions, construction and what I can fit in the structure but wanted to know if there were any better plans/ideas available or just people who have built these type of things before and had advice. Any help would be appreciated, I hope to see you all out on the playa!

Have been long threads on Tribe regarding upgrades, improvs and comments on how great it performs.

Or you can try this one also

The monkey hut has piqued my interest for when I am able to go home again. Doesn't look like this year :(

It's easy to like that tribe page. Fewer of us snark-meisters.

I can't wait to see the first (and having seen all the amazing art & structures built before, it's not totally out of the realm of possibility) shade structure built out of Lego's building blocks :D !!!! The structural integrity would be awsome intense, but the build time would be killer m a s s i v e

Does anyone have experience with shade cloth? I heard it mentioned somewhere and have researched it a little, but wanted to know if it was practical for the playa. If so, what percentage, and does the color matter (light or dark)?

The most knowledgeable shade-maker I know prefers to use 70% shade cloth in green. He refuses to use black.

I really like the quonset hut type designs - like Clif's and the MonkeyHut menioned above - for shade structures. Has anyone seen these used for RV's? I'm bringing an older Minnie Winnie; about 23' long and 9' high, plus another 1-1/2' on top for the A/C unit.

Here's what I'm thinking: I'm trying to shade most, if not all, of the RV and provide about 10' of a shaded 'porch' on the door side. Clif's shade structure uses three 10' lengths of PVC in an arch to create a 20' wide cover. If I add another 10' length of PVC to make a 40' arch, will the structure become exponentially more unstable? Any thoughts on shading the RV are much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian
