When is BM over? Every1 says Sunday exodus. Tix R till 6th?
Greetings all!
I am a virgin for Metropolis and I couldn't be more excited! It's taken me 11 years to get to go since I first heard about Burning Man. However, and this makes me feel like a silly person for asking, I don't understand when we are supposed to leave.
Lots of posts have been about Exodus which happens on Sunday but it says our tickets are good until Monday? Can I stay until Monday?
I need to plan for enough food and water and feel like a weenie for not knowing when I'll have to say goodbye to this life changing event!!
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yes, you can stay until Monday. It's neat to watch the growth and decline of BRC (Black Rock City)
Be sure to check out the survival guide (http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... index.html), read it to heart! It has important stuff to say...
As long as you have your basic survival needs taken care of, everything else will just fall into place.

It is wonderful. I say to plan on leaving Monday.. but... if you have it in you at the end of the week.. and you feel really inspired.. help strike the city! Help clean! Help take down a camp! If you are all done, cleaned, packed, and finished with your own camp and you really want to part ways with BRC on the best terms then help pack her up and send her on her way. That, and the traffic on Monday is horrendous. You can't just stay and hang out, that doesn't help anyone, but if you have nowhere to be and feel inspired then make friends with your favorite big camp and ask them if you can help them get packed up. 9 times out of 10 you'll make their Monday. Clean up crew isn't glamorous work but it's necessary.stretch80 wrote: Yes, you can stay until Monday. It's neat to watch the growth and decline of BRC (Black Rock City)

i am meeting up with some internet freinds in reno, but, in a not-so-radically-self reliant manner, i think all of the drivers from reno to BRC are bay area people who want to bail sunday, skip the temple burn, and get back to SanFrancisco.
temple burn is important to me. it's my first year with close losses and one of the factors that pushed me over the edge into finally making the trek.
In the event all the bay area people I know are flaky weekend warrior types, would it be stupid to take my chances finding a ride back to reno, even if it meant staying to help some other camps packup, or volunteering for an exodus shift or something? I don't want to cut my first burn short because the fucking rental car isnt in my name.

Um, robrob? Leaving Sunday has nothing to do with being self-reliant. It just means you want to leave on Sunday (hell, one year we left Saturday before the Man burned) Self-reliance simply means you don't need to rely on someone else to provide you with your needs.robrob wrote: but, in a not-so-radically-self reliant manner, i think all of the drivers from reno to BRC are bay area people who want to bail sunday,
As for staying after your friends leave- go for it! Just make a sign that says "need ride to Reno" and head out towards the gate on Monday. It works best if you have minimum supplies (no bikes etc), so you may want to send all but your bare necessities off with your campmates.
People do it every year, and Burners tend to be very helpful in getting folks home. It may happen quickly, it may take a while, but I would bet on it happening.

It wouldn't be the first time. If you have a sure ride on Sunday then you should plan to go home on Sunday or at least have them take all your gear home. And help them unpack it when you get back a day or two later.. But first thing is first, take care of you and yours. Make sure your camp is figured out, cleaned, packed, and that all your gear is taken care of. Don't leave your camp mates high and dry so you can stay an extra day or two on the playa... But if you plan now and nobody gets a surprise I can see it working. If you only need to drag your butt from BRC back to home, or at least the nearest bus/train station that's easily something that can be done. Taking care of your basic bodily needs between Sunday, when your friends leave, and Monday/Tuesday when you leave will pose a problem and you should be honest with yourself about how badly you want to do it, how much you want to risk the return trip solo, and how much stuff you need to keep your body alive in the desert. You'll hardly be alone but you'll still need to be self reliant. And anything you have will need to sit securely on your lap of someone else's car.robrob wrote:...would it be stupid to take my chances finding a ride back to reno, even if it meant staying to help some other camps packup, or volunteering for an exodus shift or something?...
Oh, and bring money to pay for gas and a thank you to the driver!

What eric and cricket said is true, stay as long as you need/help just keep your gear down to a minimal if you're gonna hitch it back to the airport. I don't think it all needs to fit in your lap but the less the better. In the event all the bay area people I know are flaky weekend warrior types, would it be stupid to take my chances finding a ride back to reno, even if it meant staying to help some other camps packup, or volunteering for an exodus shift or something? There should be no prob getting a ride to reno airport, I would say about 80% of the people are heading that direction anyway and would love the company if they're solo. Best of luck!

Volunteering for Exodus would be wonderful. It's often understaffed. And it might create the kind of goodwill that would put you in touch with a ride.
Maybe Exodus needs to start giving out super schwag...
BTW, Sunday is the last day when there might be activities going on, but basically it's a pack and clean sort of deal. Monday is the day the event officially ends, but Exodus is the only thing going on. Well and BMIR to tell you how long the exodus wait is.

People get rides all the time. Every time I leave, I pass those people by with signs for rides to San Fran or Modesto or where ever. :->robrob wrote:would it be stupid to take my chances finding a ride back to reno, even if it meant staying to help some other camps packup, or volunteering for an exodus shift or something?
I highly recommend volunteering for exodus, by the way. Exodus sucks, and Louise and I started volunteering to help make it better. Drop by here

and see if it's not too late to volunteer. It's a _great_ crew, and you'll make friends for life. Or 15 minutes, whichever first occurs.

thanks for the replies- nice to know i am not at the mercy of campmates if we can't come to an agreement and everyone else wants to haul ass out of there earlyish.
eric- yeah, i was actually kinda lamenting my own lack of self-reliance, and having to depend on others to drive. I had hoped to get a license this summer, but I just haven't had the time to make that happen just yet.Um, robrob? Leaving Sunday has nothing to do with being self-reliant. It just means you want to leave on Sunday

But there is no more toilet paper.. Remember.. No more toilet paper...geekster wrote:You can stay until the pots are removed. Actually, you can stay as long as you want but the BLM usage fee kicks in after the pots are gone. We generally leave on Tuesday and there are still a fair number of people cleaning up still.

OH yeah. get everythign packed except sleeping bag, clothes, and breakfast. Then hop in the car and drive away. If you're getting a ride, you might want to move camp to be near the vehicle and help with mooping and any other chores that need to be done.

Up to you. I've never packed and used the van before, so I have no realistic way of assuring anyone I will have room. Ask around while you're on playa. If you find a ride out, stay, otherwise, have a nice night in a hotel without techno blasting and in this odd state called "clean."

Remember that the biggest determinant in your plans should be what you can feasibly do without being a burden on others. I don't mean that to say that you shouldn't rely on others for anything but if you can't stay till Tuesday to help that's okay! It's enough of a gift to simply be independent and take care of yourself! (or your camp) Most people have a hard time just pulling that off. If you discover that you can take care of yourself and you still have time and energy left over then by all means help others but if you've got to get back to work or school and don't have the energy or time to spend cleaning a single item that isn't your own then.. eh,... that's okay.FaeTora wrote:If I don't find a ride out before I leave for BM, then I will just drive out with my crew and stay in Reno.
