... and "mistaken."
I agree with the sentiments expressed. One year Louise and I were riding our bikes along and someone in a car yelled at us and made us stop so she could "gift" us each a bookmark from a library in some town in the state of New York. She said it was Burning Man and "gifting" was obligatory (well, she didn't use obligatory; I don't think she knew that particular word). But she clearly felt obliged to "gift" something, so she picked up a bunch of bookmarks from somewhere.
Please, newbies. (a) You don't have to give stuff away. It's not a requirement. (b) It's give, for Thor's sake. "Gift" is a noun, "give" is the verb. Sheesh! (c) If you do have something to give away, it would be nice if either it's Burning Man related (unlike New York library bookmarks) or it's something you've made with your heart in it. (d) I very much encourage first-time Burners not to bother with gifts until you see what's going on - you seriously have no clue till you've been there. If you can't figure out what to give away, there's a clue - you don't have a clue, so don't give anything away. Once you've been, if giving stuff away speaks to you, go for it - you'll know what you want to give.
Okay, this rant's over for 3 minutes.

I agree with phil. As a newb, I brought some stuff to "gift" but mostly ended up giving drinks, water misting, and helping folks out. Bring extra of the necessities and some fun things and chances are you'll meet someone who could use either some water in their bottle or something to make them smile.

Yeh. I caught that on playa, along with "mistaken". After 25,000 copies had been printed. Oops.Ugly Dougly wrote:Shutterslut means "maw" but says "maul".
Not to self for next year- have someone else edit my rant for spelling.
And thank you for the shout out Junglesmacks!

No worries! Killer article. Straight to the point with no punches pulled. I laughed as I walked away from my few trips to center camp. The other great thing was the flow chart on the back of that issue.. "Why is someone sad at Burning man?" I lol'd for a while with that one..Eric wrote: And thank you for the shout out Junglesmacks!
Speaking of which, is there any way to possibly get reprints of the BRC Weekly issues say like in downloadable .pdf format? That would rock.. and make one hell of a cool ass archive..

You could always go to our website and download it.junglesmacks wrote:Speaking of which, is there any way to possibly get reprints of the BRC Weekly issues say like in downloadable .pdf format?
Note- the images came out weird for some reason in the pdf. We don't know why, but it makes a good way of telling an original copy from a pdf!

Yup. Hence the "Weekly" part of the name!junglesmacks wrote:There was only one issue, hm?
Everything is finished before we hit the playa, I get to play all week (and take notes for next year, as if that's work....).
Granted, we spend a ton of time on it before we get there, and Adrian pushes himself to the edge of sanity every time....

Just wanted to say I just received the 'Burning Man Live' book and it is a great read. Now I'm sorry I missed all the earlier BM's. Nice job Adrian and thanks for signing it for me!BRC Weekly wrote:You could always go to our website and download it.junglesmacks wrote:Speaking of which, is there any way to possibly get reprints of the BRC Weekly issues say like in downloadable .pdf format?![]()

First off, great article, Shutterslut!
Second, 2010 was my first burn and I had the misconception of needing to bring tangible gifts. The weekend before the burn, I took the time to make about 100 clay hearts to give out. When it came down to it, I only haded out about 10 of them, if that. What I found that giving and receiving non-tangibles (hugs, compliments, help, mister-sprays, etc) in the spur of the moment to be far more rewarding than giving or getting little trinkets that will sit stored away 51 weeks of the year.
Though I will say that the BM 2010 Bracelet I recieved for being a 'cute boy on a bike' from the guy in the blue furry pants the night of the burn is badass. I wear it proudly everyday
