If you can't afford the ticket to be his surprise (which, personally, I think would be the best & most amazing gift), I'd suggest getting him the book "This is Burning Man"- a great history, great pictures, and it gives you a feel for the event.

As for people giving a stranger their schwag from 2010... probably not going to happen. I think most of us only keep the stuff that means something to us, and almost all the stuff is from individual camps- it wouldn't have the same meaning if you had never been. Its not so much the gift, its the memories attached to it.

This year was the first time I was ever given a t-shirt, and nobody could afford to buy it from me- it means more than money.

Eric's right about the schwag factor, poor Raven was raked over the coals.
The book he mentions has been on remaider tables, too.
Or maybe a youtube tour...
But the ticket's the one to go for, imho, too.

Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Sometimes you have extra stuff.
I've given away favorite stuff when someone else liked something a lot more than I did.

The NDN Taco folks like burning man stuff, stickers and so on.
Take them something if you can.
