Greetings from a first timer from Omaha! Transportation is definitely a huge factor, not only of yourself and any friends that may join you but also your gear, water, food, etc.chardonnay wrote:Step one - get ticket, check! Now what?
My plan is to buy my friends shorty school bus from him, if that doesn't work out I'm not sure what we'll be doing.

Read as much as you can, on the main site (especially the "Survival Guide") and here on E-playa (we may be snarky, and sometimes jump on people who have expectations, but if you weed through the noise there are many priceless bits of advice).
Focus on a few non-MOOPy costumes and survival essentials your first year (shade, bike, water, food), do not worry about bringing "gifts" (unless you have a fine local beverage to share) or doing a "theme camp" (although joining one can be a good way to enter this Community) - it is enough to show up and not burden others with your presence the first year (try to breath now and then once you arrive).
Welcome home!

Formerly of Iowa (and lot's of other places) one of them DSM. 12 years on the country edge of Waukee. Good to see Iowa Burners.
I didn't go when I lived there. Didn't know anyone who went or wanted to go and was too chicken to do it alone. Moved to Oregon, just 200 miles from the playa and no excuses.
You'll love it out there. Still hot, but not humid. A nice break from August in the Temperate Jungle. About a week before you come out, if you don't already, start drinking water. You'll want the habit. Carry a stainless bottle and get used to it. If you're already a camper, just pay attention to, well, everything you can read, 'cause it's just a camping trip.
Welcome, Chardonnay.

This will be my 11th year doing Ragbrai (http://ragbrai.com/about/) (4 yrs hauling my own gear), so I have some practice in hydration and 'fun'. However I am still excited and nervous as this journey will be a whole other experience.
Currently in the research list making phase. There is SO much info to take in. Not sure if I will be going it alone or not yet, or maybe trying to get with a Theme Camp. whew....good thing I have time....

Not everything that is recommended is needed, and many things needed are not recommended. It's according to what you think you really need. But if you search for "Burning Man Packing List" online you'll find some good suggestions on what to bring. This forum is also a great resource.chardonnay wrote:This will be my 11th year doing Ragbrai (http://ragbrai.com/about/) (4 yrs hauling my own gear), so I have some practice in hydration and 'fun'.
