Can we use your FULL storage unit for 2012???

Post by British Henry » Sun Mar 20, 2011 7:13 am

Dear Burns and Burnesses,

Thank you all for BM 2010! I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope that you enjoyed me!!

Naturally I have been spreading the BM love amongst my friends here in the UK and we have a plan for 2012, though I need to reach out to the community for thoughts and hopefully resources.

We hope to arrive some 15 to 20 strong to enjoy the frivolity. However, with that many of us we will need a base camp. I know many of you achieve phenomenal feats when transporting your equipment across the world to create your camp, but thinking eco-consciously and practically for our first group attempt at a camp we were wondering if we could borrow your camp!!

I understand that in Reno there are thousands of storage units full of Burning Man gear and figured that with so many permutations of possibilities there may well be some full units that are either not used any more or owned by burners that can't make it for 2012.

Our plan would be to get the group together over here and when in Reno, hire a van and head to the mystery storage unit, opening it up like a lucky dip!

Who knows what we may then have to create our camp with but we are a handy lot and can make the most out of anything.

We would need to know about the basics such as how many water cans there may or may not be, is there shelter?, is there a cooking device?, etc. but apart from that, the rest could be left to surprise!

In exchange for this incredible gift we could offer the up keep of what may be degrading equipment or just stuff that needs to be used. There will be plenty of new useful additions and updated equipment added to your collection and of course pics of what creative things we manage to achieve with your gear. We'd be happy to make a deposit or similar if there is any concern.

We appreciate this is quite a request and look forward to your feedback/ suggestions.

Please get in touch with me, Henry:

Hope you all have an amazing 2011 xx

Interesting proposition.

The masses are surmounting and we are already looking to be some 30 strong. Any thoughts towards this mad idea would be appreciated. Maybe if anyone knows a lockup manager that might be able to identify some abandoned Burner lockups from yonder years!?

They would not be able to "borrow" it to you even if it was abandoned, if they become the owners because of unpaid rent, the stuff inside goes to auction.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

You can pay for the entire year in advance. That's what we do and we save an extra 10%.

This is assuming there are ones that do get abandoned.

So I need to get hold of them before the whole lot goes to auction.

Hire the lock-up and it's contents for a year and then in theory it is all ours until we decide there is a year when we can't make it... then it goes back to them and they can auction it just as they were going to...

I don't think the lockup co. will buy that as an option, but worth asking. I will start to contact lockup companies. I seem to remember seeing a thread of good ones on eplaya unless anyone knows a friendly contact?

If they don't buy it then I need to rely on the hope that someone would have enough trust and goodwill to let us take over their stuff for a year that they can't make it... Likely?? Anyone out there???

Cheers for your thoughts guys.
