cyclist from europe

Hi!

I'm going to Burning Man this year, and will be coming in from Europe. I'm planning on cycling either to or from San Francisco. And go the other way with the Greyhound. I'm planning as meticulous as I can but the 300 mile trip across the rocky mountains is still a bit of an unknown. Does anyone with cycling experience in the area has any advice for me?

I'm also wondering how hard it will be to get a ride from Reno to Black Rock city, with a bike, I'm not planning to ride the 447 on my bike.

Other than that I'm greatly looking forward to go to the festival and see the states!

good call, not riding 447.
if you watch the rideshare and other threads here, you should be able to arrange a ride.

Please, (especially coming from that far), read the "first timers, survival, and any other guides".

There is a lot of info here, if you do your research, and read a lot.
Ask questions, if you can't find and answer.
But:
if you ask too many questions, that are easily answered with a little effort on your part, you may encounter a fair amount of "snark".......
well, you may encounter it anyway, but, that'll make it worse.

Just jump in here.......and "be prepared".

I actualy decided not to try it after reading your (and other's) reply's in a topic on this forum. And have read most of the guide's and other material on the site.

I understand that the rideshare board on the site will be up soon?

+1 on not riding 447

Getting a ride from Reno or even Wadsworth is not a problem with so many burners coming up. Normally there are a couple of spots in Reno where traveling burners can get rides from in Reno. I would name a few, but better to wait, just to make sure they are still pick up spots.

Good luck! I've never ridden over the sierras but it should be pretty doable, just LOTS of climbing!

Check out google maps and use the "bike" directions to plan out your route. I think the grades are a lot steeper going east to west but you're also not gaining as much elevation so not sure which would be easier. If you have extra time/energy I'd ride around Lake tahoe, it's a spectacular ride.
