alone and then meet and become friends with your neighbors... Really helps one become acclimated a lot faster to the world of burning man.. I did that back in 98' and now I have a family of burners I can call on for help while on the playa or off...It really helps the hood when everyone knows everyone and looks out for each other..Mrpatatomoto wrote:Trying to decide if I should join a camp or solo it and see how it goes. Any suggestions?

Hi Mike!
If you're a handy type, consider camping solo so your time is your own. (And by "handy" I mean: if you can set up a tent and a shade structure and stake 'em down well . . . and I do mean well, because there is a whole thread in the Q&A section about things We Have Seen Flying Through the Air at the burn).
If you start out alone, you will have neighbors quickly.
More likely, there will already be people when you arrive, & you'll want to ask "hey, is it okay if I camp here?" (Always a smart thing to do). Look at the map the Greeters give you when you come in, so you don't camp in a reserved spot.
Welcome . . .

Go solo first year unless you're already in tight with a group. If this is your first year, take the time to explore, check out the various camps, make friends, see who/what fits...file it away for next year.
You'll find that wherever you end up you w/b amongst friends. Also, check out the San Diego Regional group: http://regionals.burningman.com/us_ca_sd.html...get involved with pre-Burn activities, get to know some of the folks...they loves newbies!

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Well I'm fairly handy, I go to the desert a lot so campings nothing new to me, I love working on things and keep talking myself into and out of building a interesting bike to ride around. My parents have went the past two years so Ive gotten the stories of flying stuff and read the (Whats the biggest thing you've seen flying in the air) thread you were talking about. But yeah. I had the same thought that I would probably meet more people and have more time to explore if I camp solo and meet people instead of find a camp pay dues and end out not liking it. I'm fairly adaptable so its very unlikely I wouldn't like a camp but just Thinking I should stay on the safe side and keep my options open.
