Three Questions...

Post by Beowolfman » Tue Jun 14, 2011 6:13 pm

Hello.

1) If I arrived on Wednesday, might there still be room to camp in the low density area?

2) Is it very noisy all night long on the playa? I use earplugs when sleeping, but I was just wondering how noisy it is at night. I assume the noise shifts directions with the wind -- is that a correct assumption?

3) Since there is no fee-for-service economy on the playa, one assumes that for dining one should plan for oneself. Are there any diners or restaurants on the playa that serve the public?

Thanks,

B.

Welcome

1. Yep in the outer rings you will do ok.

2. If your already use to using ear plugs you should have no problem.

3. Plan on feeding yourself. There are no food courts, diners, restaurants on the playa.

3 might need a more complete answer. There are plenty of people gifting food. Many are doing it in a random manner and others are closer to "restaurants" with a set location, a one or two dish menu, and even health inspection reports.

Still, plan to feed yourself. That way, you can appreciate any nutritional gifts as delightful extras, not something that you have to find in order to keep going.

1. yes but i find mon-wed to be the best part of the burn you might want to reconsider.
2. ear plugs are good but if you are near any of the dance camps, the bass can penetrate even the best of ear plugs.
3. bring all food you will need. period. radical self reliance!

1) If I arrived on Wednesday, might there still be room to camp in the low density area?

Absolutely. It's actually quite beautiful and more peaceful on the outer rings in my opinion. If in doubt, bring a cheap bike (lock, & lights too) so you don't mind being a few streets further out than you might normally have chosen.

2) Is it very noisy all night long on the playa? I use earplugs when sleeping, but I was just wondering how noisy it is at night. I assume the noise shifts directions with the wind -- is that a correct assumption?

Watch out for large sound systems, stages, large theme camps, 10o'clock on the map, 2'clock on the map, or being right next to the large open public plazas. Know that sometimes RVs run their generators for a while (though they make excellent windblocks if you camp on the North side of one (away from Center Camp).

Being able to look for these things (which are usually fully built by this point) and asking potential neighbors about the area is perhaps the greatest advantage to coming in on Wednesday.

Bring silicone earplugs and rip one in half to make two if your ears are small or average sized. They work much better than foam, in my opinion. Or bring both kinds. Silicone earplugs feel weird, so you might want to "practice". I'm a light sleeper but I find that my greatest impediment to my sleep is a hot tent, so I generally bed down by 2 or 3am.

The direction the wind is blowing seems to make little difference in noise. :)

3) Since there is no fee-for-service economy on the playa, one assumes that for dining one should plan for oneself. Are there any diners or restaurants on the playa that serve the public?

I would never count on it. During a given Burn would say I run into 3 surprise meals (not counting those while on volunteer shifts) and maybe a dozen snacks and a dozen drinks--the latter almost always from friends. I don't generally go looking, however, so the number might be lower than average. I dislike looking for specific camps. It can be a fool's errand, and I lack the patience.

Good point, Homies. Question three suggests he has not . . . though maybe it's just really hard for new people to believe an event has no vending. :P

Beo, the Guide is here. 22 links or 16 pages (I recommend you print it).

(There isn't a 2011 Guide yet.)

On the playa (and therefore on eplaya), all permissions are self-granted.

Goathead, actually I agree. The Survival Guide is, for all intents and purposes, useless. Hay hippie, if you fuck up, I say go ahead and die.

The only issue is, can you keep yourself from being being snarky?

It's difficult to think of a more clueless and ironic statement than, "weed out the hippies."

When I was young I took to the law
And argued each case with my wife
And the muscular strength that it gave to my jaw
Has lasted the rest of my life

I remembered one verse, anyway, though not entirely accurately. You could look it up.
