Places to buy a LOT of wood for BM 2012?
Hi all,
I'm a UK burner, living in London, been the last 2 years. Not able to go this year, 2011, but coming back big time in 2012 to get married at BRC! So some advanced preparation here.
And I want to build a large art piece (a maze) that I plan to make out of wood. Specifically, I'm thinking of building "cubes" using lots of 8' pieces of 2"x2" (or similar dimensions). Maybe as many as 2000 pieces of wood like that - all depends on price, transport, etc.
So does anyone have any recommendations on where to source that from? I've used HomeDepot for an earlier maze but this is much bigger. So if there's any burner-friendly places or just ones people recommend for a good deal on a bulk order of wood like that, or even places that do recycled wood, I'd be grateful for any advice, contacts, etc, as I'll be organising this all from London.
I plan to give it all to BWB after.
Cheers all and have a great 2011 burn!

I think it goes without saying that you should buy your ticket early next year too
Anyway, there are lumber yards that are probably a better deal than Home Despot for your needs. Home Despot is the place where you go if you just need to make small projects. If you're ordering a lot of wood, go to a construction place or lumber yard. You can get it in larger quantities and in larger varieties. They may even cut it to the size you need for you. I don't know specific places, but shop around.

I would look at multiples of a unit - a standard lumber shipping bundle. Green will be cheaper than kiln dried. Then you can weigh playa delivery into the price. Talk to the Temple people working out of Reno this year and try to coordinate with the BMORG/DPW on sharing delivery and unloading resources. There are also special preparations for burning on site or recycling. Start with the Art Dept.

The temple is already out there, in completed pre-fabbed pieces.
Too late to co-ordinate anything now, you will be on your own for this project.
DO stop by the Artery and get permission and placement for this maze before you start constructing it onsite.

He's planning for 2012. The good news is you have lots to time to call around Reno.carefactornil wrote:Hi all,

My answers were for 2012. Exactly which month was the world to end?

Re: Places to buy a LOT of wood for BM 2012?
I recommend looking up the regional groups page on the main site, and then reaching out to the Reno regional group. Those folks live and work in the local area, and would have the low-down on locally owned lumber yards that could provide everything you need, probably at a price that's competitive with Home Despot. Another group you could try and connect with (after the Burn, as I think most have already left for the playa) is the group building this year's Temple (they're doing/did a lot of the construction work in Reno).
Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing the project as it progresses!

Thanks everyone. Will contact the Temple folks, Artery and regional Reno group and let's see what they all come up with.
I'll post any useful info I find on here.
Cheers,

You might check with playa lumber recycling if they take 2x2 lumber. It's not used much in construction and green 2x2's may be twisty after drying out in the sun.

Buy from a mill if you can arrange it, if rough sawn will work.
