Did you know that most people drive through a huge battlefield site on the way to the Burning Man? The Pyramid Lake War of 1860 was the single greatest confrontation between native peoples and whites in Nevada's history. It happened during the time of Wovoka's father, near the Black Rock Desert (where Burning Man is held).



Sand in a Whirlwind is a dramatic account of the events surrounding hostilities between settlers and Indians near Pyramid Lake, Nevada in the spring of 1860. This book tells the story of how Nevada Paiutes successfully defended themselves against a series of atrocities and attacks by white men, and won the Silver Medal for Nonfiction from Commonwealth Club of California. Thirty years after its publication Ferol Egan's now classic tale continues to enlighten and engage readers.
