Hey all!
So, I am in kind of a weird last minute situation. I was planning this awesome road trip with my friend - and he just called to say something came up at the last minute and he couldn't go.
So now I have two weeks free and I've decided to try to get to Burning Man. Maybe it's crazy, but I figured I would at least try.
Here are the specifics:
I don't have a ticket or a ride.
I am going alone.
I have never gone before.
I am a 22 year old female.
I am in New York currently.
Also, I am super friendly, and although this idea might sound insane, I assure you I am not. I guess an ideal situation would be - someone decided they couldn't go at the last minute, and now there's a spare ticket and room in a car/van for one more traveler to split gas, cost of food, etc.
If anyone thinks they can help me out with this, PLEASE let me know! Although I am a virgin, I have faith in this community of people, and who knows, it might work.
Peace,
Emma
I guess an ideal situation would be:
Hey! Can anybody help me?
Re: Hey! Can anybody help me?
before step one. Read the survival guide and see if this is something you want to undertake w/regards to the environment, and all the things you need to provide yourself for your survival first and foremost.
1. Ticket. these are sold out, so you need to find one through non-official channels.
2. Transportation? ride share, fly to reno, rent car in reno
3. shelter, bedding, water 1.5 gallons per day, food
4. Plan for next year.

”On second thought, Let’s not go to Camelot. It’s a silly place.”
Roll on through, Tumbleweed.

I don't think it's crazy, per se, but certainly ill-advised. It'd be tough going for people who had a ticket, a ride across the country and knew what they were doing to throw it together in a week.
You need a ticket.
A ride (and money for gas and lodging and food along the way) there and back
Shelter
Sleeping supplies
2 gallons of water or more per day
a method to keep your used water from ever touching the ground
a way to get all your dirty water back out with you
trash receptacles
a way to get all your trash back out with you
food
sunscreen
electrolytes of some sort
hot clothes for the day
really really warm clothes for the night
Burning Man isn't a road trip. Once you get there, you are there and must provide for every last iota of your personal needs (saline, eye drops, toilet paper, toothpaste, hand lotion, everything you might possibly need...). So, unless you just have a shit ton of money to throw at a ticket, transportation and buying several hundred-thousands of dollars worth of stuff...plan for next year.

You're 22...what's the rush? Other than instant gratification. I went to my first Burn at 62. You've got time...
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

That's a pretty tall order considering most New Yorkers who are driving will be leaving within 2 days if they haven't left already.
Add to that the scarcity of tickets and huge amount of crap you need to prepare and bring - it looks like planning to attend next year would be a better option this late in the game.
I suppose you might be able to pull it all together with a few small miracles. Not trying to discourage you, but don't get your hopes up.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

DO IT!
(pending you have read the entire survival guide and know what you are getting yourself into)
This is my first year and I too am going alone. My plans for traveling are still not concrete however i'm probably a little further along as far as preparing.
I would ride share with you but im in colorado. I just wanted to chime in and say that you are far from crazy, and certainly not the only one scrambling to get there.
Best of luck!

Re: Hey! Can anybody help me?
or shoot for next year, and meet alot of burners here
There will be an alternative to Burning Man this year for all the orphaned un-ticketed Burners out there.
PermaBurn is usually occupied most of the month of August with Burners getting ready, and much of September for those recovering. This year PermaBurn will also provide an alternative venue DURING Burning Man for those who don't manage to get a ticket, or for those who just want a change of experience.
This is a free event in every meaning of the word. It will be what you make it.
Hib will host starting the August 26th. Greg before that. I will be out the weekend after Burning Man for the AfterBurn.
There IS Verizon cell service on site, as well as Sprint and AT&T in some locations.
Here is a link to directions to PermaBurn:

I'll add to this info as Burners commit to projects for the Unticketed event.
What: The Unticketed Alternative Burn
Where: PermaBurn - 70 miles north of Susanville, CA and 75 due west of the playa
When: Before, during and after Burning Man
Who: Orphaned Burners
