Theft

Post by buckethead alien » Sat Jul 24, 2004 6:32 am

From mining the threads, here is a list of some of the stuff that has been ripped off from participants over the years. This post is not meant to frighten or bum you out, but to remind you that in a CITY OF 30,000 PEOPLE theft can and will happen.

Golf cart
Art car (! See: http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=1024)
Generator
$250 parafoil kite
Many, many bikes
Art installations, components
Food
Money
Scooter
Tent contents
Booze
Drugs
Clothing
A painting

To help assure a positive experience on the Playa, I recommend locking down everything of value. Stupidly, we did not think about this in 2003 and the resulting theft took us months to get over. We are coming back, however, and hope to make our Beanstalk of white, wiggly lights taller and better than ever.

woo-hoo!

Glad you decided to bring it back. I absolutley loved it. Looking forward to the new, improved, guarded-by-sharks-with-friggin-laser-beams-coming-out-of-their-heads version.

Wonder if the Posse Comitatus looking through the Lost & Found in 2003 topic area for clues is going to bother to filter out the Lonely Hearts ads, "who was that dj?", "who was that masked cow?", and whether that missing massage table might be crime evidence in more ways than one.

Bike Theft Idea

Post by Tafkah » Fri Jul 30, 2004 4:37 pm

In 2002, someone stole my bike and my friends bike Friday night at center camp. The rumor going around was that someone left the playa with a big truck full of stolen bikes that year.

Here's an idea. Place a transmitter on a bike and "plant" the bike at center camp. When it disappears, track it down with a locator device. Report the theft to the Sheriff Dept and let them bust the assholes stealing bikes.

Woudl it work? Would a transmitter "transmit" through a Uhaul truck?

My general rule is:

Don't take anything you would die if you couldn't bring home,

but,

If you do have to take it also take measures to make sure it stays where it belongs.

But shit happens. You know. It just does sometimes.
