Best time to arrive on Monday early AM/dawn - QUEUES!

Post by Disco Knights » Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:05 pm

I've been to BM 8 times and always driven in at dawn on Tuesday morning. Every year the same - no more than 30 mins queue - when even a few hours before people were sitting in very long lines.

This year I plan on arriving on Monday morning. I was thinking of getting to Gerlach at around 8am, which would hopefully mean that much of the backlog from the 12.01 crowd will have got through and the lines should be shorter, with fewer vehicles arriving from SF or further away to join the line in the middle of the night. I plan to leave Reno at 5.30am fully loaded and ready.

Views anyone? A good time or slightly earlier or later? No perfect answer (Monday is busier) but I would appreciate the advice.

In 2008 we got there at ~7 am and were in line about an hour. We had about an hour or a bit more to try to set up before the dust storm from hell started. In 2010 we got there at ~8:00 and were in line about 2 hours. We had about 20 minutes to set up before it started raining. :) There, two data points.

Most people go for round numbers and big events. Avoid trying to arrive at 6:00 for example. Instead, try for 6:13 or 7:29 or some other odd-ball time. :P Two big events that people go for are midnight and dawn. Try to avoid those events if you want to minimize the line. You could shoot for high noon which is probably a time most people want to avoid.
