Playa conditions

Post by AlexS » Thu Jul 29, 2004 11:30 am

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if someone has been to the playa this year and can comment on the conditions there. I heard - second hand - that there's 6 inches of dust there this year!!! I have hard time believing this. I am wondering if it is really that much worse than last year. My fiancee has asthma, so dust storms are a concerns. She did fine last year, but we are very concerned with current conditions.

Thanks!

I flew over it last week and it looked the same as always to me!

seriously, assume the worst and be prepared. muslin or silk wraps, quality filter masks (not those cheapo white painting ones), saline wash for the nose, etc.

I was out there last month. 6 inches of dust is not an accurate report.

You can check out some photos taken recently on the playa and decide for yourself how crusty it is.

Phew. After looking at those pics, I feel much better. I'm a truly sucky bike rider and was kinda freakin out about trying to ride through 6 inches of dust.

What I heard out in Gerlach this past weekend was that if it doesn't
start raining soon, the dust will be notoriously bad this year.

I also have dreadful asthma and I understand your worry, just be prepared with plenty of medication ( whatever it is she takes ) and be sure she has a dust mask at all times either on her or with her.

Depending on just HOW had her asthma is you might want to think of getting an oxygen tank ( you can rent them ). But that would be in an extreme case.
