Rename Critical Tits?

Post by jodyNcolumbus » Tue Sep 13, 2011 8:49 am

I've been to BM 3 years in a row, but this is the first time I rode in the Critical Tits ride. I had read quite a bit about past years, so I was prepared for all the cameras AND there were A LOT of cameras and video!

This is the 16th year for this event and the current organizers said they are not organizing it next year. I think they are turning it over to the community to evolve into the next iteration. As this ride evolves, I'd like to suggest a name change. I realize "Critical Tits" is a take off on the "Critical Mass" rides taking place in many cities, but I think we all know, bikes are more than accepted on the playa, they are embraced and celebrated, so the "critical" part of the name is unnecessary IMO.

Suggestions:
* How about calling it a "Ladies Ride"? There are many women that will still ride topless or nude, but it would also include the ladies who want to participate in full self expression on a bicycle, in whatever way that means for her!
* Skirt Ride: New York City organized "Skirts on Bikes" in June to raise awareness of a female cyclists who was stopped by a police officer because "riding in a skirt is distracting to drivers". (Read More: Click read digtal edition and go to page 15 http://momentumplanet.com/articles/sept ... index.html)

What are some other names? Or maybe you think it should stay "Critical Tits" as in the past?

The name "Critical Mass" doesn't mean that anything is being criticized.

How about Vagina Pride Parade? :P

Women are so much more than their parts ;)

And there are more creative ways of demonstrating freedom and self-determination than by bearing breasts to what's now become a sea of cameras. It would be nice to make that clear in the title.

I think your idea to rename CT is a great one.

They're way to sensitive about people taking pictures. The "guards" or "protectors", or whatever they are supposed to be, are obnoxious. It's like they want to show their tits in public but keep it a secret. What kind of statement is that?

I can't make up my mind if "Ladies' Ride" sounds more like political correctness run amok or sleazy/cheesy dive bar talk (a la "Ladies' Night").

Sure, it was based on something else, but it's become an institution in its own right. Mind you, I'm a guy and haven't ever participated in or even watched the ride from anything other than a distance on the horizon, so my opinion doesn't really matter (and certainly not as much as the opinions of the women who've been participating for 16 years). Good luck connecting with the current and future organizers of the event though.

"Critical Tits" has a nice ring, and emphasizes that the ride is not just about a bunch of women riding down from the man, but that they can do so topless (or even nude) in a safe, non-sexualized manner. Like the use of "slut" in the "slut walk," the use of "tits" creates a connection between the sexualized, often degrading term for breasts, transforming it into something to be celebrated as something that makes a woman unique, effectively neutralizing the term.

To call the event "Ladies Ride" or something more PC would ultimately dilute and degrade the meaning behind the ride as a whole. I'd rather see the ride canceled than change the name.

How about just calling it "tits on parade"? who cares what they call it. A non-issue if you ask me.

Change the name because it may offend someone?!? Leave the name the name alone. I look at it as this : our breasts are a great part of us. They feed our children and others thanks to La Leche league's program. J think of it as a victory ride for women who've battled breast cancer and won! Or maybe a memorial to family or friends who lost that battle. Maybe we just like freeing our tits because it feels good when they sway in the open air. So ladies, Critical Tits?? Hell yeah!!!

I've avoided this event 3 years in a row because I have no interest in the ridiculousness of having a parade people aren't supposed to watch.

Most guys heading to 60 have bigger titties than many of the women riding in Critical Tits. I think it should be a ride for all women and include old men as well.

I came out of a drink somewhere walked along 7and something just as the Ct ride was approaching, i was fucking amazed how long it went on for, 10- 15 minutes of women riding along. I wanted to show my friends juast how incredible it was without just showing pics so i took a pic about every two minutes waiting till nobody was close up, so if they look they can see that hundreds of women are cycling along topless or whatever - i was just so pleased to see so many take part. Its part of what makes BM great

me 2!

I mean, ITA w/BBadger entirely.

I am female. Considered doing CT this year (my virgin year). What stopped me was my own critical mass needed to motivate myself to do it. I also agree with having the guardians and they can be as militant (or non) as they wish. Face it, guys are guys and fuck off if you can't handle the fact that some women feel objectified and sensitive about men ogling their breasts with sexual interest. That's the womens's issue to deal with the way they feel is best for them, not some random dude's who wants a photo he can splooge over later.

Anyway, never mind changing the name. It's fine as it is and has meaning assigned to it as is.

To change it to something PC kinda sorta denies, no, degrades the burn. Once the burn goes PC it's fucking over.

Never rode in CT because until this year I didn't have a bike that would make it, and this year I had other commitments. (Yeah, commitments on playa - sure sucks!!!). Maybe next year... tho I guarantee if they change it to some gender-neutral unedgy named thing, I'll prolly just have to say fuck it. Critical Tits is Critical Tits.. if you don;t like the name, then dont go!

I don't see anyone saying we need to change the Critical Dicks parade to "The Gentelman's Stroll" or something similarly ridiculous... It is what it is, leave well enough alone.

The name is fine - don't change it.

This is one of the few events I managed to catch at least part of. I enjoy seeing the female form, but it was more about the spectacle of thousands of bare breasts parading by then abut any erotic thoughts. I purposely left the camera back at camp as well.

It was certainly something you don't see every day, but if you are that paranoid about baring your breasts, consider a different venue or move it to earlier in the week before the frat boy influx.

Personally I find the name great as is.
As for cameras, I always leave mine at camp when I'm going to be viewing Critical Tits, but I don't see anything wrong with someone photographing it from afar, where the identities of the Tit-owners wouldn't be captured, and the camera isn't in their face. I feel burners have the right to reasonable expectation of privacy within camp, but if you're parading yourself topless in public, you shouldn't get offended if there are photos or video being taken, as long as the photographers are respectful, not revealing your identity, and not using the results commercially in any way.

The name is such a tradition, I hope it stays.

I'd also like the new organizers, if any, to get clearer about what they're trying to do. If they don't want the parade to be a public celebration of female sexuality and vitality which certainly will always invite photography, then they should put up walls around some space, and preclude cameras for whatever goes on there. I am tired of the people who righteously disapprove of men being sexually stimulated when they see naked female breasts. In humans, female breasts do more than just make milk. Wishing that weren't true, and disdaining males whose biology causes them to react, is pointless and puritanical.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. The CT ride means different things to different people. I've never put down anyones opinions (except in the rare instances where there was excessive nastiness towards another or racism) It's obvious you didn't actually read the meaning behind my post, but rather picked it apart and added your own style of sarcasm. Bravo. Mission accomplished.
