I have to say that JOHN GLENN is the greatest american hero to ever live!!!!

He served in TWO Wars (ww2 and korean) with a total of 24 years of service in the military (naval air corp and marines)

he had the rank of colonel

he was a fricken FIGHTER PILOT with 149 combat missions (omg how much balls did he have)

he was a US senator for 24 years!

got the distinguished flying cross 5 times over!

was honored with TWO ticker tape parades in NYC!! ((2) two!)

did this without having graduated college..

OH YEAH.. and he was the FIRST AMERICAN TO ORBIT THE FUCKIN EARTH!!! (MOST people freak out and want to puke their brains out just wearing a pressure suit and he flew up into space and orbited the earth wearing one)

and then theres the minor stuff like

going back up into space at 77 ..oldest person in space (with his gigantic balls of steel)

being with robert kennedy when he was assassinated

at least 5 schools named after him.. highways named after him

congressional gold medal (highest honor for a citizen besides one given by president himself)

married for 69 years!!!

has been alive 90+ years!!!



oh yeah AND HE WAS THE FIRST AMERICAN TO HAVE ORBITED THE FRICKEN EARTH

Had 400+ hours of flying time before Pearl, funded training fields that produced 10,000 WWII pilots, instructed at Army Air Force fields in everything from single-engine planes to bombers, flew dozens of missions over Europe and bombed the shit out of the Nazis, presided over a court-martial, rose to brigadier general in the reserve after the war, and helped get Southwest Airways off the ground. First job was as a hod carrier, got a degree in architecture at Princeton, and had a fifty year marriage. Oh, and not a bad acting career over six decades.

My other hero would be Madonna, who's had a wonderful life based on not much.

Odd political history, got suckered by Nixon and Reagan, but never exploited or inflated his war experience, unlike some. Other actors probably made more difficult political choices, but none of them bombed the shit out of the Nazis like he did.

Agree. John Glenn is a great American hero. So is Phil Arnot....one of the few surviving B-17 pilots who flew over 20 bombing missions over Germany and still hikes around Marin County and the Sierras.
