Re: BMFT: Chunky soup
Hey Guys !
Regarding the food, I would need some tips.
I can't bring any cooler, and the only tank to put my food for a week will be my bag.
I'm planning to bring dry fruits (grapes, prunes,...), almonds, cereal bars (a lot), and dry meet.
Is it possible to keep this kind of food in good conditions for a week without keeping it cool ?
Is one tupperware for each kind of food a good idea ?
I read bacon is considered as the "essential" food on the Playa. Why exactly ?
Thanks in advance for your opinion on that,
Kalouts

I was cooler-less last year, and found that dry food was fine over the course of the week.
One thing to note about cereal bars is that they tend to melt in the heat - power bars particularly turn into mush. This doesn't mean that you can't eat them, but they do get messy.
Smoked almonds were one of my favorites. This year am going to buy something like 7 cans so that I can share more - I plan on being a walking snack machine.
Beef jerky is great out there. I like canned sardines, oysters, and such.
Bacon brings tears of joy. It isn't necessary for life, in the same way that music is not necessary for life. It makes life worth living. You will be given bacon if you don't have any.

I was a solo camper last year, dragging all my stuff from the Netherlands in 2 bags. The items which kept me going where chunky soup, green bananas (they get yellow on Tuesday
Hope this helps and enjoy. Oh... And water...lots of water

Re: BMFT: Chunky soup
It's totally possible to eat without a cooler. I didn't bring one for years. Now that I do, I really only use it to chill beverages, fruit cups, and Horizon Farms milk boxes. (None of those things have to be chilled. They just taste better.) Here is a great 4-page thread about canned, dried, vacuum-sealed, and other kinds of foods that last. Make sure to bring a nutritionally-balanced selection, esp dry/canned fruit in case the rest of your food is higher in sodium than usual. And don't forget a can opener.kalouts1 wrote:Hey Guys !

Yeah, water of course
Thanks for your responses. It helps indeed..
Now I know what Chunky soup is, I'll bring some too.
Are you saying that I should not bring any dry MEAT if I do not have a cooler?
Your suggestion would be only canned meat, canned fish, and even canned almonds..
Makes perfect sense actually, thanks again for the tips !!
I was planning to distribute these ingredients too..
I don't know yet if I will be a solo camper, but I want to be prepared and be sure I have enough for me and to give..(Not only food I hope, I have other weird ideas..)
Take care guys,
Kalouts

Bring what you will eat. Better to have to do a little extra (and jerky isn't extra in my view--it's my go to protein source) and have something you'll eat, than to follow some list and find on-playa that you don't like any food you brought.kalouts1 wrote:Are you saying that I should not bring any dry MEAT if I do not have a cooler?

And thank you for taking the "meet" thing in stride. It really has everything to do with my brain going off track and nothing to do with any personal feelings about you. I don't actually spell well, but I do get confused with the wrong homonym.

If you read the thread . . . . . . you will see that many people recommend dried meat. It's fine. Dried, canned, vacuum-sealed, etc.
So, go read the thread!
If you have questions, ask in that thread. It will bump the thread to the top of the Food forum for others with questions like yourself.
I was just reading through the BMFT Topic and asked a food tip question. I did not really try to find another more suitable topic, as this one sounded apropriate.
I saw the link you suggested after I posted my response..
Maybe I should have READ THE THREAD before... sorry, but it's not a big deal, right ?

It's a big deal if you get huffy. The deal with this board is we get asked the same questions over and over. We tend to let people who ask one of those know that they are displeasing us. Glancing over what's been written, I'm just seeing our playful snark, rather than any serious nastiness. You're doing okay. Take us with a grain of salt, we're "mostly harmless" and can be quite helpful. Tone is so hard to read on a computer billboard, but I really think you're doing fine.

Re: BMFT: Chunky soup
Kalouts-
You'll discover that there are certain "protocols" that form on any established board and the ePlaya is no exception. While your question is valid, asking about general meal planning in a thread about soup is a little off topic when you want real answers. Savannah was just pointing out a thread that has been on-going that is about general meal planning.
You'll find a link in my sig to our "Overview of the ePlaya", it gives some pointers on the culture here & how things work. A very quick read that I highly recommend.

Savannah, Eric, Cryptofishist,
I understand your point. I saw "Burning Man Food Tip" and did not think further, my apologies for that.
I'm not used to communicate on forums. I'll read more about the protocoles.
Thanks for your responses anyways.
Take care

Jerky is a staple in my opinion. & if you can make your own EVEN better. that way you can control the quality of meat,, salt,, spices etc.
Kalout.. I belive there is a tread under "Food & Drink" called non-cooler based menu items??? Im not teriffic at copy & paste here.
there were some awesome ideas there if I recall..
Question though, how are you EVER going to keep your beer cold???

Re: BMFT: Chunky soup
That's easy. Just get up at 6 am and drink a sixpack. After that, you'll be buzzed enough not to care if the beer's warm or not.
And you're doing fine with no english. If you're confused, ask.

And a shot of whiskey is a nice spontaneous present.
I still remember the guy from year 1 who gave me a shot of rum on a cold night. He was tall and immense, with great long hair, a long dust-sweeping coat, and a beard. He looked like Hagrid from the Harry Potter movies. Such presence.
