Burning Man '96

Post by kiddo » Thu Aug 19, 2004 6:37 pm

I've heard references to the '96 event as 'out of control' or 'over the top' and that it may have come close to being the end. I was just wondering if anyone knows what was so crazy about it and such. Wasn't it the last year before it became a structured city (with the half moon streets)? Just curious because I don't know and I hate not knowing things. At least things that I know I don't know.

(grin)

Thats old wifes tails. They were so screwed up they don't know if they were there or not. Some of them are still mess up to the max. All they can do is whine about the good ole days. And how they made asses of them self.

I don't think it was out of control or over the top. But if the organizers hadn't realized the event had grown so much that a lot more planning and more enforced safety rules put in place it would have got to that state. Specifically, cars and guns. The gun ban was pre-emptive, unfortunately the car ban came one year too late.

It's no different then if you have a house party with 6 people over, and one with 600. They're not interchangeable.

Mostly lack of coordiation...and people burning everything. Cars, camps, art (especially other peoples). Drunk driving, especially through peoples camps while they're sleeping. Much nicer now.

96 Recap

That was the last year before streets, so chaotic in setup for starters. finding your camp was next to impossible without having landmarks memorized. "Go to the porn theater make a right, then when you see the green tortoise bus head left. Look back at the man, you should be looking at his right shoulder. Then walk backwards 50 steps while looking at the man. Ok then turn around you should see a big red flag, we are somewhere around there."

Also when you went through the main gate it was a mad dash to the BM area, so crazy dust storms and invisible cars. Hense the year of the head on collsion and the people who were run over while sleeping in their tent.

The porta potties were the worst I've ever seen. Litterally crap was over the top of the seat and the lines were a half hour long

But all that said it was one of my most favorites, very tribal and raw.
