Gate opening early this year
Perusing my Survival Guide I see "Do not come to the event site before our gates open at 6pm Sunday, August 26."
So after two years of "soft" openings" I guess it's official now.

Re: Gate opening early this year
Yes. It came in the mail with tix and a fireball. There's no "New for 2012" section. I haven't noticed any other changes so far.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Re: Gate opening early this year
There isn't always a "New Info for This Year" section; the new items tend to be flagged in the margins . . .

Can you provide an image of the above (6pm opening) from the survival guide?Perusing my Survival Guide I see "Do not come to the event site before our gates open at 6pm Sunday, August 26."
So after two years of "soft" openings" I guess it's official now.
This signature left intentionally blank.
Re: Gate opening early this year
it says such type things in the stipulations

Re: Gate opening early this year
The earlier opening is a Good Thing!
But I continue to lament the sloppy way people express themselves, even in official documents.
They get it right in the previous sentence ("...the Sunday that falls eight days before..."), then blow it. Next thing you know, some underemployed lawyer.......August 26th, the Sunday before Labor Day,...
Rant over. Earlier opening is Good!

Re: Gate opening early this year
Technically, it still is something of a soft opening. The gates open at 6pm on Sunday night, but as I understand it no event listings may be posted/added before 12:01am Monday.
The BLM allowed the gates to open early (also 6pm Sunday) in 2010 and 2011, but they did not allow that information to be posted in advance. After some discussion they agreed to allow advance notice this year.

Re: Gate opening early this year
So I guess this means that the gates will secretly open at noon on Sunday now?

Re: Gate opening early this year
It wasn't ever a secret, just not announced in advance. When the gates open it's posted on the online via Twitter.

Last year I was in line for 2 and 1/2 hours before I was parked at my camp. (8pm to 10:30pm)
Guess we're going to tell everyone now so we can go back to waiting 8 hours in line?

If everyone shows up at the same time, they will have to wait a large amount of time to get in.
If people were to stagger their arrival, the waiting time would be shorter.

Everyone. Show up at the gate at 6pm on Sunday. Yah, that will make your trip into BRC quick.
Whatever works for you.

Re: Gate opening early this year
i heard it on very good authority that they are letting RV's OVER 27' long Early Access to avoid a bottleneck ClusterFuck.
Starting SATURDAY AT MIDNIGHT the secret entrance for EARLY ARRIVAL MASSIVE LUXURY RV'S will be on Jungo Rd. from Winnemucca, NV.
easy access from Interstate 80.
seriously....
keep it slow though, the speed limit is 55.

Wins my vote for best post of the year
Burning Man isn't about the stuff you see when you get there ....it's about the people that brought that stuff there
Re: Gate opening early this year
I never get there when I think I'll get there, since I never leave when I think I'll leave. So maybe I should fake pretend plan for getting their early.

You know, some of us don't tweet, and some of us don't even travel with a way to get on the internet...trilobyte wrote:It wasn't ever a secret, just not announced in advance. When the gates open it's posted on the online via Twitter.
Yup, it's the burningman digital divide, one of the other things the playa 99% will be protesting.

Re: Gate opening early this year
Of course people will bitch and complain and protest. Radical self entitlement is a way of life for some people.
It's not like the gates are closed to those who either choose not to or don't have access to technology. There isn't either the time or the resources to call up every ticketed burner (or fuck that, go door to door - not everybody has regular access to a phone) when the BLM says 'hey you can open the gates and start letting them in.' Do you say "no, we can't open the gates early, some people may not find out?" I think they've made the right choice - try and get some word out and then focus efforts on getting people through the gates. Those who don't have twitter or get word through a friend still benefit because thousands of people who were ahead of them in line are through - net result is a shorter wait time. And then finally, after working the issue for many years with the BLM, they've agreed to not only allow the gates to open earlier but they're agreeing to opening them early in advance (instead of making the decision on site), and allowing the information to be published in advance.
There's been a Burning Man digital divide since burningman.com launched in the 1990's. And before that, the RSE crowd could contend that there was an unfair geographical advantage to those who lived within range of a ticket outlet.
