GPS Track logs
GPS Track logs
Hi All,
So it was a stunning and great Burn. Thank you to everyone!
Here is an early and rough example of what I am trying to do with GPS track logs:

You need an SVG capable browser, but there are plugins for almost all browsers.
Note the track marked 'arrival' and how it passes the entrance. Yes, I did totally miss the entrance to Burning Man. The funny thing was that a dozen cars followed me on down the road. Sleep dep and road hypnotized I pulled over and lmao...
If you have GPS track logs and would like them mapped, then please send them to me! If you have mapping-fu or SVG -fu and are interested in extending this, then please contact me!

It is fun to look at the tracks I took and to reflect on how limited my journey was, when compared to all that there was at the city! Next year I'll need to engage in a Situationist 'derive' to encounter more...

Hi Ever,
Most GPS units have a 'track log' memory that can record where you go. You can then load that into a computer and print out maps of where you have been.
The 'innovation' to my track log maps is that they are animated-you get to see a bit of the motion.
Overlaying it on a scaled map is 'coming.'
Also, showing the tracks of multiple people is coming.

Thank you!EB wrote:Rich,
That is totally cool.
All the GPS units I've seen have it. My original overgrand plan was to have a geoannotating golf cart, with a terminal so people could upload their GPS track logs out on the playa and see what other people were doing.Do all standard GPS's come with that track-logging feature?
I'm wondering aloud how could something like this be turned into a playa-friendly piece of interactive art...
That, uh, ran into practical difficulties ranging from a lack of time to a DMV denial, to well, a lack of time

BTW, I am thinking of putting a geocache at whatever camp I am at next year. It would be cool if some other camps did the same. We might post clues on a bulletin board someplace in the city. Nice way to trade camp swag and meet people who come in looking.
