Sound the Trumpet: the BRC Philharmonic Orchestra

For a couple of years I have had a crazy idea that Black Rock City needs a symphony orchestra. Beethoven on the playa? It's a natural fit.

To this end, I'm reaching out to musicians, visionaries, skeptics, organizers, allies, etc. -- anyone who would like to hear classical symphonies on the playa, and/or help with the logistical challenges of assembling an orchestra out of the dust.

If this is you, come to the on-playa meeting of the BRC Philharmonic, at 1:00 PM on Tuesday of Burning Man, at the Golden Cafe in the French Quarter. This is the inaugural meeting of this multi-year project.

There is plenty of musical talent on the playa each year -- the trick will be to get musicians together, with instruments, with a bit of rehearsal beforehand. So, I think a Black Rock City Orchestra boils down to:

- a network of musicians who are also Burners
- a collection of toughened, playa-ready instruments to be loaned to musicians
- regional section leads to organize off-playa rehearsals, and
- a road map to lead us to a performance, three or four years from now.

These are some of the things we'll talk about at the meeting.

I am looking forward to seeing if this will work! I realize that a symphony orchestra on the playa sounds like a crazy idea. But, then I remember that the dude who wrote this -- -- was deaf.... and anything is possible.
