An impossible task...brief Burning Man description

Post by geospyder » Tue Jul 09, 2013 5:10 pm

I know I've seen the discussion on ePlaya before but I cannot find it. I'm looking for a very brief - one, two or three sentence description of Burning Man that I can use for a person who has never even heard of Burning Man before.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

I keep it extremely simple. It's an arts and culture festival held in the remote Nevada desert. If they don't care, the conversation continues on. If they're curious, they'll ask about it and I let their questions guide things.

I'm nudging this over to Politics & Philosophy, since I think that's a better fit.

whats the most insane thing you can think of? well thats normal. think of something even more insane. now build it. take it to the desert and break it, now take it home. when you get home make it even more insane, spend all your money and time on it, then take it to the desert again and break it again. keep doing this until satisfied

I forget where I saw this, but something along the lines of:
camping in the desert with a large group of drunk naked strangers who are playing with fire.
Definitely not comprehensive, but it does get people thinking.

Thanks for the ideas...

I have no problem explaining Burning Man verbally face to face. What I was looking for is a one to three sentence written description that would be included with a gift to someone that most likely will have no idea that Burning Man even exists. This is for a M&G that I'm attending next week. We are using a token gift exchange to break the ice since we have not met each other than on a forum similar to ePlaya. The token gift should somehow represent the area we are from. My gift, to represent Nevada, will be one of the pendants that I'll be gifting at Burning Man. I've decided to place a business type card in the box, using one of the sayings I spotted on the link that was posted. It should be a good conversation starter :D

I've always liked: "A one-week summer camp for adults."

Or you can just call it "that thing in the desert."

What? You're telling me this now! I thought polka was integral.

I think a reference to the movie series Mad Max might fit in there...

Once you reach satisfaction, load it in a trebuchet, light it on fire and launch it.
