Good place to get water on the way - I80 Keystone exit

Post by bruce508 » Sun Aug 04, 2013 9:01 pm

Dear Burners:

I advise people that it is ideal to fill up on filtered water near BRC (see note 1). Those coming from the SF Bay area will probably come though Reno on 80. Reno is about the last town of reasonable size (though resource pages list lots of stuff even further on down the hwy toward BRC) so that's what I'm shooting for.

Here is the best information I have obtained on doing this: At the Keystome exit off I-80, exit 12, you drive south and what looks to be just off the highway is a big mall and a supermarket, Save Mart Supermarket
(525 Keystone Avenue – 775-786-2150 ). According to the Reno Resource guide Reno-Keystone (http://www.burningman.com/preparation/t ... f8ZqRweMVd):

"Open 24/7 during Burning Man.". Just as critical: "An area of the Save Mart parking lot will be set aside for LOTS of bulk-water. They will also be carrying 15 and 55-gallon barrels, spigots, and pumps. You can also fill your containers, or even fill your RV."

Words like "bulk" and "you can also fill your containers.." mean to me that they have a filtered water machine of some kind, just what I'm looking for.

My Emergency Backup will be "Fresca Waterhouse
1196 Rock Blvd – 775-358-9893 – (Oddie)" which says, " Two vending machines also operating 24 hours." This one mentions 40 cents/gal. (Note 2 for directions)

I hope this is helpful. I could not find this in the usual text searches of the website, I could not understand the Reno guide by intersection, and my previous post on this (http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... 24&t=64534) had an error in the title, Mea Culpa, and people just jumped all over me for it. Thanks to trilobyte for pointing out the resource pages.

NOTE 1: Buying packaged water is generally considered to be THE classic terrible greenwashed environmental no-no. Someone made a package that you would generally not reuse, then put it and the water, about the most dense thing one buys commercially, onto a fossil-fuel burning truck, and then drove it back and forth between distribution centers, then to the store where you bought it - a lot of unnecessary transportation, when water delivered through a pipe is much more efficiently transported and generally carried in re-usable containers. If you buy gallon containers of water at home, then drive it to BRC, over the sierras, you burn still more more fossil fuel and put still more carbon into the air. Much better to go get filtered water (or tap water) as close as you can to BRC, hopefully from a local reservoir with minimal transportation, no non-reuseable packaging, and no distribution transport.

Note 2:
Fresca Waterhouse 1196 Rock Blvd
* Take exit 16 for E 4th St towardVictorian Ave
0.2 mi
* Turn left onto Prater Way
0.8 mi
* Turn left onto Rock Blvd
Destination will be on the right

I've given this a nudge over to the Food & Drink board in the Preparation, since that's a better fit for general preparation tips and discussion. The keyword spam has also been removed.

Or if you don't want to carry the weight as far (as in: up and down the hills in the congesting to-BRC traffic), nor pay for the extra gas for the extra weight, then buy your water in Gerlach.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.
