What the heck were you doing carrying that kind of cash? (And where do you live, do you have a security system, and what is the patrol schedule for your socks and are they carrying AK-47s? heheheh).

Seriously however, this sounds like a great story Simon.

If all they can show is you were an idiot, holding a stupid amount of cash, you can get it back. Hire a lawyer. Expect a fee between 10 and 20%.

This shit happens all the time. There was a very good in-depth story on this in the media earlier this year, documenting many cases of people getting large sums of cash confiscated while never being charged with a crime.

Great reminder to A) never answer any questions by the police B) never consent to a search and make it very clearly you do not consent to search. If you are pulled over and asked to exit the car, make sure to lock it on your way out so they cannot get in. Sadly, with the current drug war and abusive police out there, you have to assume all cops are there to fuck you, even if its just a small minority.

FYI, there are many reasons why people carry that kind of cash: contractors, day laborers, there was even priest who had thousands of donation confiscated because it was in cash in his car even though he was transporting it to the main parish.

(Not that the OP had anything to do with drugs...)All the cool kids are having their drugs flown in via drone next year. Pre-pay so you don't have to carry a big fat wad of cash for the Sheriff to steal.

Besides, I heard the will call drug line really sucked this year.

That was in the local news here.
Kinda one reason that when we go to Orem and/or Salt Lake City and/or Ogden to attend a baseball game, we don't rent a car anymore. We take my car and run I 80. I have Esmerelda (ES) county blue plates. I've been asked several times, even once by an NHP officer and a Storey county sheriff if I was from Goldfield because of having Esmerelda county plates.
If we rent a car we'll usually take US 50 and stay off 80.
I've seen several drug stops by the Washoe county sheriff and NHP along I 80 east of Sparks. Usually taking place in the Mustang or Patrick area.
A few years back one stop resulted in an NHP car being stolen by a passenger in a stopped vehicle.
