Portable Utility Tanks

We have seen on the playa, especially come Monday after the event, these 250 to 500 gallon plastic water tanks that lie low to the ground. Presumably they are rented for the event, then the people at United Services come by periodically and pump them out. To purchase one, and then store and transport it, would be both cost prohibitive and a logistical nightmare. Does anybody have experience with renting them on playa?

They are bulky, but light when empty and often available on Craigslist. Palletized liquid tote bulk liquid tote. Here they are $20 used. 275 gallons. Stackable.

Talk to the water and waste pumpers?

Barbie Death Camp already has one of those, and I do appreciate the feedback. What we need ideally is something lower to the ground because our runoff from the shower can only fill it about half way before you reach equilibrium.

What Figgy said - raise the shower up, or look at rigging up a pump system to get the waste water from the shower into a graywater container. I looked into things like water and graywater service for the camp I was with years ago, and it was cost-prohibitive for us. We were a pretty small setup and relatively broke when it came to additional camp expenses. To inquire about pricing and get something set up, you'd want to give what are now the United Site Services offices in Reno a call. If I remember correctly, you basically set up an account with them by phone (they may need to mail or fax contracts) in advance, and then book the service. They don't do any of it online. Other than United Site Services, I'm not aware of any companies doing that type of work. Anyone doing it would need to have obtained a BLM SRP (special recreation permit) and pay fees to them, as well as be set up with Burning Man's Outside Services - you may want to write to [email protected] to get more info about approved providers (the deadline hasn't closed for providers to apply for this year, but they'd have info on who did it in years past).

That's awesome, and would probably keep you cool lying on it too!
I work with these water storage "Bladders" and the thing is, to get them more than about 1/3 full, you have to pump the water in. I mean, passively dripping water via gravity won't let them get very full because you're working against the weight and flexibility of the bladder. Just keep that in mind with water bladders like that. And they are difficult to lift or move when full because they slosh around, so you could store them on a piece of plywood or a shallow crate if you intended to lift it.
