Hey all,
Haven't been to this Burning Man thing since 2011... I'm not sure yet about this year, but I was wondering how hard it would be to get a ticket in the last month.
I'm planning to decide maybe at the OMG sales... What are my chances?
People used to sell a bunch of tickets just before the event, even the years when it started selling out.
Is that still the case? How was the ticket market in August 2013?
Thanks for the insights!
How hard is it to get tickets in August?
Re: How hard is it to get tickets in August?
I think a number of tickets have sold for below face every year since the sell-out, simply because 1-2 weeks before, a lot of people give up . . . because they're forced to by external factors, or because they suddenly have an opportunity but realize that they haven't done the rest of the work.
So if it were me, I'd:
* get my time off
* reserve any necessary vehicle at a place fully refundable
* make thorough packing/shopping lists
* tell everyone you're looking . . . friends, family, co-workers
* join any regional mailing lists + FB groups near you.
It's hard to estimate the odds, of course. It's just that those who are ready and socially tied in have a good shot. Anyway, I feel like I'm telling you stuff you already know. Good luck!

Re: How hard is it to get tickets in August?
It's difficult to say, because both the number of available tickets and the number of people who will be looking for those tickets are unknown quantities. In 2011 tickets were hard to come by after the event sold out. In 2012 a unique combination of events made for them to be easy to come by (tickets were even selling at below face value prices). In 2013, tickets were available but not all that easy to come by. Based on what I know (from following the market and knowing stuff), I'd say the chances of tickets being really easy to come by are remote. Chances are more likely that tickets will be harder to come by, but hopefully the determined and the vigilant are able to get the tickets they need.

Thanks.
Obviously we can only speculate, but knowing what the trend has been these past couple years is helpful.
I guess the last time I was paying attention was in 2012, and indeed everyone was freaking out about the high prices until it turned out that it wasn't that bad closer to the event.
Since it wasn't as easy last year I'm gonna assume it's gonna be a little harder this year.
I'll probably register for OMG whatever sales and let the playa gods decide!
