Using a Smart/Magic Pie with SideKick, advice?

Post by Wüstling » Fri Jul 11, 2014 1:47 am

I am in the middle of building a light 4-wheeled 2-seater using the "Side Kick" kit.

I am now also contemplating adding an assistive electrical motor to it, in particular the Smart Pie (http://www.goldenmotor.com/goldshop/product/226.html). Something low-speed and pedal-assisted so that I hopefully I won't get bothered by the authorities (I hope to get it accepted as a pedelec, or rather hope they won't even bother checking as I'm not intending speed like crazy over the playa). Anyway, let that be my worries, not yours.

What I am most worried about is whether the motor can survive the playa dust. I can't find any information about how these motors are sealed. They even come with a fan attached, so I wonder if the air is flowing right through the inner parts, or if it's a well sealed unit. And if it's sealed, won't get the damn dust get in there anyway?

Anyone having experiences with these motors? Any other motors (I have 20" wheels) better and more reliable than the Magic Pie models?
