I've told this story before, but a pair of Rangers contributed greatly to me returning after my first year.

Sunday rolled around and the city started to empty. It hit me super hard. I had been planning to stay until late Monday or early Tuesday. But as BDC started to pack up, I just couldn't stand around to watch it. All of a sudden, I wanted out. Determined to stay for the temple burn, I decided to have my car all packed up and ready to go as soon as the temple was down. The temple burn was hollow for me and I just walked back to camp and left.

But sitting in exodus, tired and burned out, three things from that day stood out in my mind, and I realized I would be back next year.

1) My lonely walk from the temple burn back to camp was interrupted by some strange person offering me a shot in the dark. My last little bit of playa magic.

2) A bunch of us Barbiebarians did an impromptu ice shift when Arctica wasn't open on time. It was so much fun.

3) A pair of Rangers walked by as I was taking down the trash fence and asked if I was the artist. I said yes, though I didn't think of myself as one. One of them said they walked this route every day and smiled every time they saw it. They thanked me and moved on. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I thought about it a lot as I sat in the dark of a midnight exodus.

So thank you random Rangers. Burning man has been a great addition to my life.

Utah rangers, whether Black Rock or local only. After everyone walked to the temple or went silently back to their camps, our rangers held the perimeter until the police tape was up and they were released. They were hurting too, and they held their positions. And then some of them worked all night, and some are still working that event today.

One time at Outpost Tokyo, this gator came in with a super clogged air cleaner. Man, this thing was barely running. The driver was headed to commissary, and if I didn't get this thing running soon, he was going to be late for brunch! So I jumped right in, and started lifting the seat to access the filter. Man, that was tough. So I took a drink from my canteen, and got right back into it. Nothing stops a Ranger from his duties, right? Ok, well maybe that cute girl that needed directions to the porta potties. So being the chivalrous individual that I am, I felt it was only proper to escort her to them. I mean, I couldn't just send her on her way all alone for two blocks, right? No sir!

So back at the gator, I finally got to the air filter. I had to move several wires, and a rubber house to get to it, but I did! All that effort calls for another drink, and some beef jerky. I could feel my energy levels dropping, so I took a short 30 minute break, and got right back to work! The air filter was held on by a complex hose clamp device, which required a screwdriver to remove. Luckily it only took me 15 minutes to find and identify one in the single drawer tool box.

After 20 short minutes, I had the airfilter removed and on the work bench. Common procedure is to gently tap the filter to remove the bigger pieces of debris, then take an air hose and blow the remaining dust off. I figured I better take a drink to rehydrate myself, then take a short 15 minute break to assess the situation, and plan this repair. I don't want any mistakes made on my shift! 30 minutes later, I was back at it. Man, my work ethic rivals none other! The rangers are lucky to have such a hard workin guy such as myself at their disposal!

The next step was to locate the air hose and nozzle to blow the filter clean. Safety is this rangers top priority, so I needed to find safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and a dust mask. These items were pretty easy to find, and so in 45 short minutes I was ready to get down and dirty.

The filter was easy to clean, and within the hour it was ready. But I sure worked up an appetite, so I took a short 40 minute lunch break, and was ready to re install the filter. But wouldn't ya know it, no sooner than I picked up the screwdriver, a young couple from Germany stopped to ask where they could find the swingers camp. So it was with great pleasure that I pulled out my trusty map of the city, and proceeded to help them locate the camp they were looking for. I regaled them with a brief 15 minute story of my trip to Germany when I was young. Well, technically it was only a 4 hour layover in Frankfurt, but it was an exciting 4 hours! But for some reason either they didn't understand me, or didn't appreciate just how awesome that airport was.was.

Anyway, after they ran off, I turned my attention to the air filter. As soon as I got a drink, I'd get right back on it! After I drank my bottle of water, I got the screwdriver and got going. Installation was just as just as simple as removal, and I really didn't notice the hour pass by so fast. But I did notice my stomach growling, so I took a mere hour break for dinner, before I went back to button up the project.

It's remarkable just how bright a full moon is, and I really didn't notice when it rose. Still, it only took me another 45 minutes to get the bundle of wires and rubber hose back into place. With a tremendous sense of satisfaction at a job well done, I wiped the sweat from my brow as lowered the seat back into place. I looked for the owner of the gator to tell them they can get back on their way, but there wasn't anybody around. Man, some people just don't have any patience. Rome wasn't built in a day you know.....

I had four separate Rangers help me on my way back from Reno last year. They were all helpful and nice but Rooster was by far the best. I then ran into him on Saturday afternoon and had a great chat with him, he told me about the story of donner party and why that is a box on the ranger bingo card, encouraged me to file a report about how I was treated by the LEOs that took me to Reno and he suggested I get my camp to head to 12 o'clock for the burn since he said is can be a bit quieter. We had plans to leave the camp at a certain time that of course totally failed but when we got to 12 o'clock we were told to take a seat and not to let anyone in front of us because we were the first row. I didn't realise quite how awesome that was until about 20 minutes later when I turned around and saw how much it had filled up behind me. That combined with the drive from 3:00 to 10:00 via Canter camp and the open playa as he took me back to camp in his golf cart were two really important, special and down right transformative experiences of my burn last year. I feel very much indebted to him for those things.

Never needed help from a Ranger, but am totally in full support for what they (well, most of them,) do at the burn.

Hip hip horary! Hip hip horary! Hip hip horary! (that's how we did three cheers where I'm from.)
