Mobility Camp, 7:00 inner circle

Post by The Rat Lady » Mon Jul 14, 2014 4:11 pm

Hello Everyone!

Mobility Camp here...I know, you thought we were Black Rock City Dimension of Accessibility, Right? Well we are, but we decided to go with the flow and be just MOBILITY CAMP since that's what everyone calls us anyway. Just some tweaks after our management change last year

Mobility Camp
is happy to announce we are again located at 7 o'clock on the Inner Circle of Center Camp, just across the street to the back of the Center Camp tent and cafe....

We work to provide support for the disabled, or alternatively abled in the spirit of Radical Inclusion:

We offer art tours 4x nearly every day, on our hayride trailer behind our trusty and dusty golf cart.....

Tours leave camp at sunrise (5:45am)We dare you!, Morning (9am), twilight (6pm) and night (9pm). These tours go every day except the major burn days, where the 6pm tour combines with the 9pm. Check our front desk for details. Space is always first given to the disabled, though we next consider the walking wounded and there is almost always space for the abled bodied. You can sign up in advance by visiting our desk on the Playa.

We also provide a charging station for medical equipment, and offer camping for the disabled + able bodied - check http://www.mobilitycamp.org for details.

We will be hosting a short and informative talk on Wednesday at noon about how to make your camp/art piece/art car more accessible...

If you, or someone you know, is mobility impaired contact us! We will try to answer any questions you might have! Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do Burning Man because have limitations. You too can take part in the Wonder of the Burn!
Volunteers are welcome as well!

Also at our Camp will be The Bookcrossing Zone, the Temp. Tattoo Station and the Gifting box.

Good for you Rat Lady carrying on the tradition of Dale, Linda and all the volunteers of past years! I will not be at the event this year, but I recommend all burners stop by to learn about your work.

Will you operate some sort of "wrecker" for those genuinely disabled folks who use mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, etc. who have their battery go dead on the playa? I was at one event where they towed a small flat bed riding mower trailer behind a golf cart, specifically for picking up dead mobility devices and getting the riders to a place of safety. It's not like they can get a quick jump start and move on down the road-I expect it takes several hours or overnight to put a good charge on.

We don't have a dedicated vehicle for that, but any of our vehicles that run across someone with a dead battery would bring them back to camp so they could plug in. We do have folks in our Camp who go out in search of folks who need a lift on a regular basis.
Most Camp vehicles could haul a wheelchair or Mobility Scooter if the rider could transfer to a seat in the vehicle.

Anyone who is building an Art Car or Interactive Art, there are things you can do to make your Art more accessible, that are simple if you do them in the planning stages. Check out our page on how to be more Wheelchair friendly. http://mobilitycamp.org/?page_id=61
The more vehicles that are out there available to the mobility impaired, the easier it is to deal with unexpected issues that can and do crop up on the Playa.

If you have mobility equipment that needs charged and are out in the city, Most of the Solar Charging Camps will put Mobility Equipment or other Medical equipment first on the list! Look around when you first arrive and see where the closest one is to your Camp.

We currently do not have a Wheelchair/Mobility scooter mechanic, so if you know of one, send them our way:)

We very Much appreciate all the support we get from the community, and the BMOrg.

Thanks Trilobyte!

It's been a rough year out in the default world. I'm looking forward to coming home for a bit:)
