returning burner parent....

Post by La La » Fri Sep 17, 2004 5:01 pm

Oh the weird stuff that collects and processes in your head after Burning Man upon returning to the default world. It's tough for anyone but fellow burners to understand how challenging it is for some to return to society's framework in September.

For me this year, added to that, was my starry-eyed 5 year old daughter who had her first day of Kindergarten only a couple days after my dusty smiling return. As we waited for her new teacher to open the door...I looked at the steel jungle-gym the kids were climbing on and started picturing what color el wire would look cool on it at night.
Seriously. Then I shrugged and laughed at myself....and noticed the other mommies starring curiously at my braided hair extensions. LOL! Somehow it was surreal. It was more difficult for me after this burn to transition from "being myself" for a week to being "the adult in charge" again. Thankfully, I've almost completely adjusted back now.

Burning Man is obviously a little different for everyone.
For me BRC is much like my playground with all my friends who miss their turn at being kids too. (BTW seeing adults on that big rocking horse REALLY made me smile).

So anyhow the song a fellow burner wrote and posted to our e-list kept rolling around in my head.
So I wrote this to the same tune and thought I'd share it too. I figured that perhaps other 'burner parents' could relate. :-) Thanks for letting me share....think of the song:
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds":

Picture yourself at a school as a mother
Watching your child with her innocent eyes

Society calls as she walks towards the classroom
Her child with big hopes in her eyes

Turn to the playground watch spirits so free
Her life starts to spin in her head

She sees Black Rock City and misses her turn
And she’s gone

Playing in the dust with burners. Playing in the dust with burners. Playing in the dust with burners….

Filling out forms and collecting their paychecks
Adults look like puppets…no life in their eyes

She wants to go run on the grass with the children
The mom with the Man in her eyes

Parents are rushing and running to cars.
Aiming to get through their day.

She suddenly sees that they want her join.
And she’s gone.

Playing in the dust with burners. Playing in the dust with burners. Playing in the dust with burners….
