Rewriting the TOS?

Post by calsur » Tue Sep 21, 2004 12:25 am

Currently the Eplaya is being bombarded AGAIN by someone who adds nothing to the experience except negative BS. There are some people on the Eplaya who like to fight the trolls. Under the current TOS the Admin has limited power to cut the trolls off.

So the Question. Should the TOS be revised to include a Troll blocker?

And how should the Troll Blocker work? I favor the old George Carlin approach. Everyone gets issued a dart gun with 10 darts. As you are posting along the Eplaya you do something to piss someone off, they shoot you in the ass with a dart. When you collect ten darts Admin pulls you over and gives you a ticket for being an asshole. 3 tickets and you are gone.

And because you only get 10 darts per year you will not waste them. Who knows what jerk you will run into next month. And you only get to put 1 dart into each ass. This way it is democratic. 10 people have to agree you are an ass and 30 have to agree to get you booted.

Or maybe the first 30 get you sent to a penalty box where you can not post for 30 days and the second 30 get you booted.

This should be easy to do using the present “Poll” feature and a new Eplaya area called “Trolls”. And all Admin has to do is monitor and boot. The Eplayans decide who is a troll.

Of course all this would have to be written into the TOS.

This is a real rough cut at a possibility. Suggestions are encouraged.

Such as... how about taking eplaya-related whining out of General Discussion and into the feedback threads?

I think usernames could be color coded when displayed according to the number of obvious trolls they have posted as determined by the eplaya BOFH(s). Maybe something along the lines of ...

from my perspective, the world doesn't need more rules... it actually needs more people obeying the enormous amount of rules already present.

actually, let's repeal some rules... ya kno, anarchy.

but hey, just my opinion.

Hear, hear Joel.
The problem is that there are so many rules, that people no longer feel it necessary to obey them.
Kind of like when both your parents are yelling at you at the same time, at some point you just stop listening.
The key is to minimize the amount of rules that exist to a few key rules, then enforce those rules.

Of course, I'd vote for anarchy any day. Although, to be honest I don't know how well I'd fair in a society based on survival of the fittest. I am not that strong. But I can survive for at least a week with little food or sleep, so that has to count for something.
I came here to kick some ass and drink some Ten-high and I am almost out of Ten-high.

While Joel and I diverge politically, we converge on this. Before there were laws, there were manners. The rude were ignored... or got the shit beat out of them. Let the trolls take their chances here just like everyone else, and if they get out of hand (Like BRR!) then it will become obvious to Admin and they can send out a hit team and waste their ass.

unfortunately due to the massive amount of rules created for every little societal infraction, determining which rules are "key" becomes difficult... fundamentalists would say harkening back to the "good book" (albeit the bible, koran, upanishad, etc)...

nothing is simple as it seems... and i do agree, our paths do converge when it comes to insisting people take responsiblity for their actions.

Fuck more rules. I prefer an anarchic 'troll-dump' like we did on Black Rock Ric a while back. That is, nobody posts to the troll-y thread and at the same time, whoever cares to join the stomping makes an effort to *bump* old threads back to the top. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee down down down goes the troll. Pretty easy, it just takes the collective discipline not to answer the troll.

Which is what I had planned to do this time, but PetUntilEaten just had to maul somebody, and the poor nogster was so deserving of it. Keep in mind the various threads the nog started (with his first posts, uh-huh), then go read the TROLLY TROLL TROLLS thread. If you don't fall head over heals in love with PetsUntilEaten, you ain't got no heart. I only hope she comes to Seattle soon...

the system you call for will reward cliques and encourage popularity contests. We already have a crush thread. I don't think we need to institute an un-crush mechanism.

Rules are FUN and the best part is, we can make them up as needed according to the situation!

Admonish someone for "improper waiting" at the porta-potties!

Scold a spectator for looking without greeting!

Post a sign that describes in fine detail the rules for escorting an art car through an intersection and issue "tickets" to those that do not comply.

The possibilities are ENDLESS ... rules are FUN! Make up a few and enforce them RIGOROUSLY.

What does Trolling mean?

Rules on ePlaya are almost impossible to follow.
The concept of a thread having its life lived out only on its initial topic is HIGH-Larious. I was thinking, moments ago, how it is strange how threads always take a life of their own, whatever the initial topic is. But then, they somehow get back to the point.

Its strange. Someone out there a mathematician, statictician - maybe you can track the coherentness of various threads to see how well they stay on topic. The result will be a crazy up (stays on topic) and down (way off topic), up and down, up and down graph, but always going up, be it small steps or large.

Rules intended to rule us are unpleasant.
Rules that assist us, are ok.
Rule-making for making rules, too strange.
If you want to lead the people, stand behind them.
