Give groups of virgins a better introduction to the playa

Post by north » Tue Sep 28, 2004 9:37 pm

Damn, there were a lot of virgins on the playa this year. I personally don't mind them so much -- I like watching them get their minds blown/cherries popped. I've brought one a year for the last few. That's usually how this thing

But the word-of-mouth method that brought so many of us to the playa is getting overwhelmed by those who find it through media, and pretty god-damn mainstream media at that. Some of them are still pretty cool, but some just read articles about "a big rave with naked chicks" and decide to come. The fuckin' frat boys and the like. (yes, you knew all this, smart-ass. Here comes the point).

As much as I don't really love opening people's minds on my only vacation from the close-minded, I think this is a real chance to shake things up a little, so I think they should be given special attention.

I think there should be a special 'orientation' for any vehicle that shows up on the playa with only virgins. They get a special set of instructions, lasting about 20-30 minutes, going over all the usual shit and a bit more.

This is probably more for us than for them. I heard (second-hand) from a cop/long-time attendee that there were more assaults on the playa than ever before. The cop blamed it all the virgins. I personally heard from several women that they were sexually harassed on the playa, and I felt ashamed it happened in my community. This is obviously not cool, ruining the open atmosphere our community has nurtured.

But the larger and more inclusive the burn becomes, the more of society's neuroses are going to come out on the playa. And the more we have a chance to let these fuckers heal from a culture which twists together sex and violence.

So part of the chat needs to be about freedom and permission. Just because a woman (or man) is naked doesn't mean you can touch them. Just because they touch you doesn't mean you can grope and kiss them. Just because they let you grope or kiss doesn't mean you have permission to fuck them.

The other parts of the orientation could be more straightforward, and maybe help a few of the usual problems: "Only in the potty if it came from your body", "Piss Clear", "Wear a light at night", "Ask permission for pics", etc.

I think it should also be pretty personal -- tell them your favourite places, an experience, give them their first gift, whatever. Camps could also volunteer to help them out, if they had extra resources and patience for them.

I think it could dry up some of the 'fucktards' you lazy bastards are bitching about. Gotta do it somehow.

oh, I had this fantasy about hanging out at the gate in a military uniform (Major Bigtime) and giving such an orientation but *I* decided to take a different approach. Why dont you make up a plan and take it to the gate folks / greeters. Maybe if it was done in an interesting way they might let you give such "orientations". I had planned mine to be somewhat on the funny side without being mean or degrading and using humor to get the points across. I think thursday-saturday is probably when something like that is most needed.
