Cooler Idea

Post by aaronsewell » Fri Sep 12, 2014 5:54 pm

Has anyone thought of taking a cooler and putting a water proof divider down the middle so you have your food on one side and ice on the other. So you food doesn't get wet and your ice is self contained. Just an idea that popped in my head and wonder if it would work? I've lost alot of food due to water log during camping and wanted to solve that problem.

Some people put their food in a waterproof container. Others put their ice in a waterproof container. Either works...both probably work better than trying to modify a cooler. But if you think it might work, go for it!

I put my ice in a 2 - 1/2 gal water jug with one end carefully cut off.
It holds about 1 - 1/2 bags of ice & pouring the cold water out was relatively easy.
The cooler had some condensation on the bottom but no lakes.
I kept mainly dairy and drinks in this cooler, we felt meats had to be placed closest to the ice when we kept them in there.
Temperature was cold enough except the one time we let it melt too far before replenishing.
None of our food went bad.
Our other cooler had dry ice and the frozen meats.
Next year I'm looking for a slightly larger container that will hold a block of ice.
Collapse first and avoid the rush

Although this probably isn't the sort of scale or idea you meant someone has definitely had that idea. It sure seems there's a lot that can be done to improve the average cooler, have fun ;)

I have two ice chests into which fit steel-wire baskets, which I put in there up-side-down. The wire-baskets are the kind sold as sock drawers or dish-washing drying racks or some such, from Home Depot or Walmart or some such store. The ice goes in the bottom, and the basket holds the food up above. It takes a bit of effort to put the ice in there, to get the ice cubes past the basket, or push the basket in there after the ice, but it works. :D

(Of course, the last couple years I brought a refrigerator instead. )

Okay, okay, I can see how that would work out real nice in the cooler, I may even try it. Modify it slightly so along with my socks, though, I'll throw in my underwear also

My small Yeti cooler fit perfectly in the back basket of my trike.

Besides having a ready supply of cool and refreshing drink, on two occasions I sat a weary walker on the ice chest and gave one a ride from the airport to the temple and another a ride from the airport to that magical Tesla coil, that had a keyboard and played 'electric-lightening' music at the intersection of 5:00 and Esplanade.

I love Yeti coolers.

I just wish you didn't have to take a 2nd mortgage out on your house to buy the large ones.
