What/Where/When

Post by keebs » Fri Sep 26, 2014 10:54 am

I really appreciated the amount of effort it must have taken to construct the What/Where/When for this year's event, which was my first time. So many things to take part in!! So, so so so many.... it boggled my mind, and still does, when I thumb through it in retrospect at all the things I wish I could have attended.

Is the "program", as it were, available in some format before the event? I'd love to be able to spend hours at home (more likely at work) or on the road to Gerlach figuring out where in time+space to put my corporeal body when on the playa.

-Rather than use playatime to sit and try to figure out where to go and what to do, when lots of cool things go on all at once.

I mean, BRC is a big place, so if the flaming ice fucking is going on at 11:30PM on 2:30 and Venus, while naked barbed-wire thong daquiries are at 7:45 and Gooseberry, I hem and haw as to where I want to be the most, and it's already 11:25PM and I'm at 4:15 and Asshat deliberating on which direction to go.

Call me OCD (Overtly Clueless Dorkwad?), but I'd be keen to be able to make myself a loose schedule for the week, so as not to miss out on the things that I find so incredibly cool.

The problem is that most things don't happen on time or at all because "Shit happens".

Yep right here you'll also find events listed there that aren't in the book since the book only fits a certain amount. There are also iPhone and Android apps that you can download that have all the events and maps etc

I said in another post that one of the first things I do when I arrive on play is to checkout the events and mark the ones I'd like to see. I'm lucky if I get to any, as there are so many other things to see and do along the way.

That said, I think it's available on-line prior to the burn (albeit it may not be complete or it may include things submitted after the book has gone to press). There are also a couple of phone apps that list camps and events as well.

First off, after the Burn is done, throw away that book of regret.
Second, you make the kick-ass event that everyone will regret not attending.
Third, yeah, there is an on-line list.
Forth, you still ain't gonna make it to all the stuff you want.

I call that little book - the book of fomo creation. fomo= fear of missing out. They hand it to me at the gate and I promptly put it somewhere in the van and it won't be seen again until I am home unpacking. Except once when I needed to find out what time ice was open til on Monday.

I did download and play with the iBurn app. It had some code that you had to put in after the event started, so it wasn't helpful before, but it did have GPS and it could take you step by step the event of your choice. I thought that was a nice touch.

I usually try to make it to the major burns. This year we went to the Marching Band March off in center camp Friday night. What a treat! I may try to do that again. Our campmates played center camp and we went to their show, another treat. Other than that - it's more about the places than the events for me. Like - I want to hit Jazz Camp. Or head out to Opulent or the temple or somewhere.

I do like having the fomo book when I get home. Some of those things look like they would be a lot of fun. Maybe someday I will try a schedule. nah.

I brought along that "Time to Burn" app and it was well made and had all the event info. The search feature was especially nice. Still, the only use I got out of it was helping other people locate certain camps.

For that little book, I think it's a nice souvenir. I only saw that little book come out when people seemed bored -- though that's not to say that there's anything wrong with going to the planned events. For many of the events, you really do need to plan on them or the supplies run out if you're late. That's one of the reasons I stopped attempting to go to events.

I call it the book of all the stuff I'll never get around to doing.

Oh, and I do check to make sure our camp's events are listed how we wanted them to be. And our address is correct!

I'm not sure if anyone cares, but the 2015 "Time to Burn" app is back up and going. They don't give you camp address or music line ups until Aug.31st, as per Bmorgs rule update, however, you can edit any event to add the address yourself, after you find the address on the camps fb group, or if you're able to find it here:

*Map is "unofficial" however every single camp I checked was in the correct location.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the Q&A board, since that's a better fit for general event preparation questions.

To answer your question, no the printed guide is not available pre-event. However, the playa events calendar, which is the way you entered your event, is available for browsing and review ALL SUMMER LONG.

Even better, the playa events calendar actually contains all the events and listings that people have entered (whereas the printed guide tends to have only a single digit percentage of what's out there).

The burn-tastic smartphone apps generally get a data dump of the whole playa events calendar just prior to the start of the event, and roll that out as a downloadable update in the week before Burning Man. The cool part about that is that they're smart enough to be completely self-contained guides, you do not need to have a mobile connection in order to use the apps on the playa.

Except I'm already on playa when they make the data dump lol

Searched but couldn't find a current answer,
now that placement announcements are out and we know our approximate location, should we go back in to our Playa Events submittals and update the text with the our address? Or will the system automatically be updated to show our addresses online? What about the printed book?
Cheers.

Addy's will be updated online and added to printed guide.
Edits to events have to be "approved" by someone and I've sure they'd rather not review a bunch of people trying to add their address.

I bring a notebook. Small enough to fit in my pack. Organized enough to find people and events. That along with the map will help. I still don't make it to anything except the M&G. This year I have several things I would hate to miss. Mayanimals party, Monday sundown party at the Man, Tuesday's bearded Lady March, pancakes, fresh bread, margaritas, snow cones, tacos,....It looks like I'm hungry already.

* I bring a printed list with a schedule of volunteer shifts and friends' parties and a little bit of white space.
* And a notebook for new things and sudden invitations.
* And immediately after set-up, I look through the W/W/W with a fine tip sharpie and go through "One Time Events" first, with a full circle for "yay!" and a half-circle for "might be fun" . . . and stuff the book into my travel bag.

Then I usually only make it to the stuff on my primary list. :D

But I have made it to things in the W/W/W at least twice, and those were fun. Much more often, however, I've made it to something by accident and then have seen it in the book later. :) So it's not like the book doesn't hold wonderful mysteries and opportunities, but sometimes they start an hour later than they're supposed to, cannot be found at all, or I get distracted on my way to somewhere else.
