Ticket rumor

Post by juliamacosta » Sat Jan 03, 2015 7:46 pm

I've never been to Burning Man but I've been told you can't just buy a ticket once they go on sale.

I heard you actually have to know someone in order to go. Is this true?

I'm all about recycling, love, enlightenment and of course meeting some burners! :)

That's not true. Anyone can sign up for a Burner Profile on the burning man website and then register for the sale during the registration period. You do have to have done those things before the day of the sale but you don't have to know anyone who's been before to be able to do those things. Sign up to the newsletter, Jack Rabbit Speaks, it will all be explained in there beforehand.

On the day of the main sale expect all 40,000 tickets to sell out in under an hour. If you don't manage to get one you can sign up to the official ticket re-selling program STEP. You can also try buying a ticket from someone in the aftermarket like through a friend or off Craigslist. That's the point where knowing people in the community comes in handy.

Thank you! I see that you're from Sydney. I must say I was there for only a month and I fell in love. Beautiful city :)

juliamacosta, "knowing people" in the community is simply helpful toward getting a ticket, not a must. Here's why: Say you manage to buy 2 tickets in the regular sale, but the friend you bought a ticket for backs out of going. Who would you want to sell that extra ticket to? Ideally, someone you'd met and liked, and wanted to make happy, right? Or at least someone you'd seen once or twice at local events, and knew not to be some non-Burner scalper.

Also, it's usually much less stressful buying or selling in person, where the ticket and the money can both be examined. Buying online from a private seller can be a bit spooky.

So meet Burners in person if you can, as early as possible. They may be the people you end up buying from or selling to. :)

Had to do this last year and yes it is extremely spooky!!! In my particular situation I purchased the ticket in early July, and didn't receive my ticket in the mail until the second week of August. It was originally a Will Call ticket that I had the seller transfer into my name and then ship a physical ticket to my address. Since I wasn't the original purchaser TicketFly wouldn't talk to me about the ticket. 6 weeks is a hell of a long time to bite your nails and wonder if you got ripped off.

But are you about camping in the desert, sleeping in dust, peeing in a jug, mocking hippies?
And to answer your question, if that is you in the avatar photo, then yes, you definitely need to know someone in order to go, and that person is me.

That's worrisome. I can see that TicketFly might think that it's contract is only with the original purchaser, but there's reselling in this community and it could turn out to have some nasty effects down the line. For instance, what if you had had to sell--would you have been able to change the name then?

Exactly... I tried explaining the situation to them, spoke to several representatives and supervisors but they wouldn't even confirm the shipping adress for me unless I was the original purchaser with a laundry list of verification information (original purchaser's name, original billing adress, last 4 digits of card used to purchase, etc.)

I would think that BMORG would have posted the procedure for doing this and what info they require to make the process go smoothly. I think Trillo posted an email address for making suggestions. It might be beneficial to everybody if you explain what you went through with ticket fly so that they can setup exact procedures (assuming they haven't already).
