Hey Burners – thought I would start out and say “hi” before diving in further in to the maelstrom…
My name is Anton and I hail from Perth, Western Australia.
It’s my first burn and I’m a little late to the party given that I’d first hoped to go in 1994 after I read / heard all about it while hanging out at University. Study, work, business, family and the other trappings of life seem to have got in the way until now. And so in my 40th year young (and with thanks to generosity of my family) I am being thrust upon the playa at last.
I’m also spending some time holidaying in San Francisco (another first for me other than a layover at the airport a few years ago) and using it as a base of operations.
My vague plan was to hire an RV from somewhere (SF) and make the pilgrimage to BRC – I’d be guessing that the availability would be pretty low / pricing pretty high at this point. I’m not a stranger to camping in the desert though.
Anyhow – I look forward to talking / meeting with many of you during this adventure!
Cheers, Anton (Factotum).

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome Factotum. I wouldn't bother with an RV. There's plenty of time to make connections for a ride or take the Burner Express Bus. With the money an RV would have cost, you can buy great camping gear. Rent a bike ahead of time and find someone to store your little pile of stuff till next time. (I own a brand new bike in Thailand that I'll never see again but someone is storing it for me.) Make eplaya your latest hobby and all your answers will be questioned. And visa versa. Anyway, A big hug and welcome.

Welcome, Anton!
If you don't get an RV, hire a cargo van and sleep in it.
(Actually, that's one of many possibilities).

Welcome! There is plenty of fine American Western landscape to travel around before or after Burning Man. Our ocean temperatures are colder, many people rent wetsuits to go in water. Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, many Utah canyon land parks, Oregon hot springs, WPA-era (1930's government-built) lodges, the Olympics, on up into commonwealth BC, more. Just look at as one of many future West America visits! I would also say tent it with some shade cloth you can resell. Link up with mates for travel and logistics before and after. Find a fun camp.

Welcome
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Thanks all for the advice so far - I'm sure I'll ask plenty more questions over the coming weeks
