Hi, I see some people recommending the clamshell-carport layout. Looks good. My question--do you have to do anything special with the Y-joint pieces where they hit the Playa? Since you don't use one side of the "legs", the Y-fittings on that side have 1 unused sleeve, and this sleeve looks like it's just sitting naked on the playa.
I've having a hard time describing it, but see the photos below.
It seems that the clamshell design leaves the lower edge of the carport perched up on the Y-joint canopy fitting, does this smash or damage the fitting and make it un-usable for a normal carport setup later? How do you secure the lower end of the carport to the playa when it's perched up on the joint fitting? Or is there another step in the process that I'm missing?
Thanks a lot.

Re: Clamshell-carport question
Our carports are a different brand (King Canopy). MyLarry made stubby angled legs which are fitted with the carport feet; he used an old trampoline frame.

Re: Clamshell-carport question
I was gonna say, just slip a 6" piece of the right size pipe in the fitting to keep it off the ground.

Re: Clamshell-carport question
We re-purposed a frame that was missing a couple of legs and the canopy into a clamshell last year. It worked well. It was tarped it with a 20x14.
We set our connectors directly on the ground and they may have dug in a bit, didn't seem any worse for the wear.

Re: Clamshell-carport question
Thanks for all the replies and good tips.
Do you stake the lower edge of the clam-port to the playa? If so how? (because it is perched 6-9 inches above ground level)
I"m thinking extra long candy cane rebar that hooks over the Y-fitting?
(Edit-sorry the photos just loaded, I see the answer now, thanks!)

Re: Clamshell-carport question
We run a rope from the top joint (it can bend just the pole) straight down and rebar it. Sometimes we nail the feet down to keep them from digging.
