Virgin looking for camp to leverage my skills!
Virgin looking for camp to leverage my skills!
Hey everyone-
I was planning to go to BM with a group of friends. We all managed to get tickets and they decided on paying $1000 to go with a turnkey tourist camp that provides everything - bussing in, out, meals, etc. I really didn't want to participate this way, but they went ahead and pulled the trigger on the plug and play experience and I decided not to.
I'd like to join a theme camp and use my strengths to contribute to the community. Would love to hear specific camp suggestions if you know of camps that need help!!
Here's some of my skills:
- Bikes/motorcycles - I'm an avid cyclist and alright with repairs.
- Mechanical stuff - I've always worked on my own cars, and even rigged up a solar system on an RV which I lived in for a year.
- Building stuff - Aesthetics isn't my forte but jerry-rigging things with limited materials to solve a problem is my specialty. "Fuck with it till works" is my motto for almost everything in life.
- Coding - I do PHP/Mysql/Jquery/HTML for a living.
- Misc: fitness, volleyball, snuggling kittens.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions. I'm really excited to be a part of this!

Kudos on not going the PnP route; any camp with $1000 fees is suspect anyways.
You might want to say hi on the threads to some of the bike repair camps, mutant vehicle threads, as well as cruise any threads where people are looking for campers. If you are ok with perverts, Retrofrolic is taking people who are willing to lend a hand. I don't usually repond to posts like this but I like your description of yourself and anyone that snuggles kittens in ok in my book

Re: Virgin looking for camp to leverage my skills!
Welcome to the site! Take a look around at some of the threads on this board for camps that are actively recruiting for new members. If one piques your interest, reach out to them! You can also get in touch with your regional group, getting to a local event is a good way to connect with others in your area that you might want to camp with... and being in the same geographical area means you can help with projects and things they may be working on (as well as possibly share in some of the logistics of getting things there and back again. A partial list of theme camps will be published in the coming weeks, but if you're antsy you can take a look at the archive and see what camps have come out in years past. If one really resonates with you and you don't see them posting here, then look 'em up online (they may have a web site or Facebook page) and reach out to them.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Re: Virgin looking for camp to leverage my skills!
I want to say that it *usually* comes out around early June, but that really can vary by several weeks from year to year depending on the submissions that the placement team receives. The published list is partial in that not every camp that submits a questionnaire is given placement, a number of the camps who submit questionnaires also choose not to be listed in that directory (for one reason or another), and there are lots and lots of awesome theme camps that do not submit questionnaires or try to get 'placed' (or allocated space) by Burning Man. I've been a part of some kind of theme camp every year I've been to Burning Man (started in 2004), but I don't think I was in one that was on that list until 2011. That's one of the reasons connecting with people in the region is a great idea, you might find a great bunch (or a few great bunches) that are really close by that aren't on any kind of published list. Again, good luck!

Ahahahaa! I hope it works out for both sides.tommynnn wrote:How did you know I was a closet kinkster? PM sent.pink wrote:Retrofrolic is taking people who are willing to lend a hand.
You can trust Retrofrolic; they've been around for years.

While there are many camps that seriously border on scams with their dues, $1000 is just about what Green Tortoise charges (per the Burning Blog & their site), and they are anything but suspect. I've camped near them for ages, and they're an excellent camp to be near (other than the dearth of shade over their tents - I feel for those people). I'm opposed to most of the "purchased vacation plans", but not all camps are alike. This is where research on the purchasers side comes in.
That said, kudo's to the OP for not wanting to go that route at all.

I agree--Green Tortoise isn't Plug & Play. A large part of their fee is bus transport (for people without cars, licenses, or Burner friends yet; i.e. people who otherwise would not have made it into the event at all until Burner Express) . . . and any camp with unshaded tents cannot be seen as babying their campers.Eric wrote:fixedpink wrote:Kudos on not going the PnP route; anymany camps with $1000 fees isare suspect anyways.![]()

I had forgotten about GT when I made the post. I apologize to GT, and will restate, any camp that is not GT with 1,000 dues is suspect. Or just being commercializing douchebags.
