Packing list links and ideas for Burgins

Post by some seeing eye » Mon Jun 08, 2015 4:12 pm

In 2015 there will be about 28,000 virgin participants. They can and should read ePlaya, the BM website, and more to prepare. Better yet, meet some experienced burners in person in your region!

A great, essential really, preparation tool for burners is the packing list. Who would have known we would need so much STUFF for a week? And yes you need quite a bit of stuff to be self sufficient!

These threads have info:

A daypack list:

Of course

And you can search the internet for Burning Man packing list.

Never too early to start preparing!

Sure our many experienced ePlayans have more to add!

(here is mine)

We are going on a camping trip. We are going to have fun. We will participate in many unbelievable experiences. It is a wilderness - we need to bring everything and leave nothing behind. The conditions will be extreme: hot, cold, dust, wind, maybe rain. There will be over 70,000 people there in a fabulous 24 hour city, so if something is forgotten, we can get help. You may be tired, but happy, and can easily misplace or lose anything you bring. Everything you bring will get dusty, it washes off in a washing machine, but will permanently get into the crevasses of anything you bring, after 2 scrubbings, it is still on my bike.

Personal Things

________________
Group Things Remember to bring tickets!!!

Camp
1. A camp name
2. Camp shade structure: light colored tarp, shade cloth, rebar 18-24” stakes, rope for guylines, rug to keep the dust down, bungie cords to allow the guylines to stretch
3. Camp chairs, camp mattress for sleeping in daytime, camp table if room
4. Space blankets to cover all car windows, 1.5-2” wide blue masking tape to tape it on, scissors to cut to size – this works unbelievably well to keep the car cool
5. Camp marker, flag or banner, optional camp mailbox
6. Garbage bags
7. Radio for camp to listen to the pirate radio stations
8. Lantern for camp
9. Little Red Wagon – useful for hauling things or can be towed behind a bike for picking up ice and the like

Car
1. Old sheets to cover car seats on the way home, you may (will) be dusty
2. Extra car keys – if you loose one
3. Highway maps and directions to the site, list of useful stops on the way if you are out of mobile coverage
4. Cell phone for emergencies on road
5. Music for car
6. Inverter for running house power off the car (charging etc.)
7. Jumper cables if your car battery runs down
8. Bike carrier
9. In many years, the local fire department has run a car wash for the schools – a high power sprayoff. It is a great thing to do if you are headed that way.

Tools
1. Compass for setting up your shade structure to be in the shade
2. Tape measure for laying out stakes
3. Vice grips for pulling out stakes
4. Bailing wire & wire cutters for attaching things
5. Duct tape, wide blue masking tape
6. #5 sledge hammer for driving rebar stakes, claw hammer for pulling out nail tent stakes
7. Staple gun for attaching the plastic for the evaporator
8. Nylon tiewraps and cutter for cutting them off
9. Sharpie markers
10. Air mattress patch kit
11. Air mattress pump – a time saver for inflating
1. Whisk broom for sweeping accumulated dust
2. Seems like one year toolbelts were big in my camp. It’s a good way to keep track of all of your tools. Rechargable screw guns are very useful for construction if you have power.

Niceties
1. Foot soaking tub, vinegar/lemon juice & water
2. Solar shower, slat platform , black plastic & boards for evaporating pool, hold down stakes, shower structure to hold up the solar shower, curtains if needed

Misc.
1. Mending supplies & safety pins
2. First Aid kit (include neosporin, nasal hydration, Ibuprofen)

Kitchen
1. Kitchen: plates, bowl, mug, knife fork spoon for each, can opener, lighter, stove, cooking pan with lid, knife, dish pans, dish sponge, corkscrew for wine
2. Several large coolers, ice, plastic bags, sealed containers, boards to get coolers off ground, silver tarps to cover them
3. Place to store food and plates and keep the dust off
4. Mesh bag for drying garbage
5. Household bleach and soap for staged kitchen washing

What's in your backback?
A notebook like moleskine and pen to exchange contact information, gifts, water, snacks, batteries for night, spare eye protection/corrective lenses, plate/ mug/ fork-spoon-knife, chopsticks, plastic bag for clean utensils, plastic bag for dirty utensils, handy wipes, bag for dirty handy wipes, alcohol gel hand cleaner roll of toilet paper.

Food
Some ideas: Aseptic box soup, soymilk, grapes, cherry tomatoes, carrots, granola, yogurt, Trader Joe’s no cook meals, miso soup mix, a quick grain or pasta. Store chocolate in the cooler. Rehydration salt type drinks. Bread can get moldy sealed in the heat.

Past experience is that you will eat less than you plan because you will lose your appetite, foods with a lot of liquid are good, strong flavors and salty are especially appealing.

Keep the preparation (and cleanup) simple.

Alcohol if so inclined, but you are at altitude and extra prone to dehydration which alcohol causes.

The only 2 things that can be purchased there are ice (blocks last longer) and coffee – so cash

Water
1.5 G per day to drink, .75-1.5G/ per day for showering (high end is more showering, but water weighs 8 pounds/gal.)

That list sucks. Nowhere is absinthe mentioned. And don't give me this "alcohol if so inclined" bullshit. Absinthe should be at the top of every packing list. In fact, in my case, it's the entire list. And look how well I've turned out.

Hahaha Doc Pyro! Well played! It's clear that absinthe has gone to your hair. Just don't cut off your ear or anything! I have tasted many smuggled Euro absinthes and it is interesting they are a stimulant. And a fine experience was a mobile absynthe bar I encountered on playa.

Srsly though, what does a village camping list/ checklist/ timeline to-do look like? Open source and all...

I've moved this great resource list off into it's own thread.
