Maybe try reading the main BM web page first. Start here: http://www.burningman.com/participate/volunteer.html

BTW, there are some that'd argue that building the Man isn't so much the ultimate expression of volunteering as much as it's a high profile opportunity to bragging rights.

A Greeter shift is a great way to get started volunteering. I did it one year. Meant to do it this year but got busy. I would think that the only wayt to help build "the man" is to be involved VERY early and get there early.

Greeters is awesome, but can be a real bitch in bad weather. Which makes it that much more rewarding.

Badger, I know people who build the man because they're good builders and want to give to the city. Not everyone is volunteering for bragging rights. Did it ever occur to you that maybe Duke is being genuine? What you said may be true. But then it's also worth pointing out that some people (not most that i've met, thank god) want to ranger for the power/prestige. I'm not saying that's you, but see how it cuts both ways?

Tsk, tsk, Badger, lots of people who want to work on the Man do it out of a very sincere desire to contribute to the symbol of our community. It's true that some folks are all about the "glory", but let's give Duke the benefit of the doubt, eh?

Don't let anyone talk you out of volunteering to build the man if you want to, Duke. They always need help, esp experienced builders & carpenters.

There are ceratinly other opportunities if you want them. Any way you slice it, you should definitely follow the link in Badger's post and complete the volunteer questionnaire. That way any department who needs folks with you skills can contact you.

How you can really help

Post by robbidobbs » Thu Nov 18, 2004 7:38 pm

I've worked for Greeters, Rangers, Gate and DPW. Each department has its own personality type that succeeds, and if there's a mismatch, there can be aggravation. Try something temporarily, so you won't get sucked into a job that might make you want to quit after a day.

If an otherwise unattached newbie wants to help in a way that's non-commital, just show up at Playa Info and wait for someone like yours truly to come by and snap you up for a day. I utilize their services to great affect for such day-labor activities as puting up the signs, filling hand-sanitizer dispensers, and generally keeping me from spontaneously combusting. I need volunteers, and I treat mine very well. You get a good education on the infrastructure of BRC, and you'll never look at porta-potties the same again.
