Wind turbines have a min wind kick in speed and a max wind steer out or feather out speed. You have to design for that on playa. Low cost turbines - you need to thoroughly research.

I don't know a lot about it but I do believe I be looking for a vertical axis Savonius-type generator. IMHO

Vertical axis is a cheap (=good!) way to harvest wind from all directions without active or rudder steering. There are also egg beater style vertical turbines. The evapotron uses the vertical design the Sheik posted.

Retrofrolic has had a wind turbine in addition to solar & the backup gennie since 2011. For several years (until we started running and electrical play station all day & night) we really only needed the generator for overcast & still days. Having both really helps because the wind is often generating power at night and helping to recharge the batteries even when we are all abed.

And no one has EVER tried to climb the tower.
