Turning right on HWY 34 north...

I'm thinking about turning right at Gate Rd. on exodus, the Tuesday after Labor Day and taking Highway 34 north all the way to Alturas, CA as part of my trip toward Crater Lake and on to the Oregon/Washington coast.

I hope to miss most of the outbound traffic by taking the road less traveled. Is HWY 34 from Gate Rd. to California maintained in the same condition as 34 from Gerlach to Gate Rd? I will be towing my little 17 foot travel trailer.

Any input from those who enter/exit this way is appreciated.

forget the nemaste, and buy spare tires. look at that road on google earth. notice where the pavement ends. about 8 miles from playa entrance. zoom in on the turns, and culverts. notice evidence of wheel hop in the gravel. miles of washboard road. notice all 3 farms on that looooong stretch of gravel road.

And exodus after turning right at Gerlach is not that bad.....11 years and no longer counting

Yeah, it's actually a fast trip to 447 once you're off the playa. Maybe 2% of your exodus time will be spent getting to 447, and then 447 to Alturas is smooth sailing.

And to explicitly answer the question, 34 north very quickly is NOT maintained like 34 south to Gerlach.

Yep, take 447 to Cedarville. The route north is fine, the majority of people are heading south.

Thanks to all! Looks like I'm taking the 447 route as part of the beginning of a 4500 mile return trip from BRC that will take me from Seattle all the way to Sault St. Marie, MI before turning back south toward Texas.

Be sure to get some taffy and fudge in Sault St. Marie. And ride your playa bike on Mackinac Island.

34 to 447 north is probably the best way. As said before, on 34 north, the pavement ends about 8 miles north. But the unpaved road is not that bad. It graded and pretty wide. I travel this road many times a year. It does have some steep mountain sections, but not that bad. Lots of hunters and campers haul camp trailers on this road.
