the space dome presentation?

Post by thecanyonwalker » Mon Dec 20, 2004 10:52 am

hoping someone can help me - I saw two things that really made Burningman for me (my first time!)

The dome out in the middle of the playa that hosted a space "tour" - does anyone know who did this and where I can get more information about their work?? It totally blew my mind and was a tremendous gift to share!

and secondly - there was a big screen visual on the main strip that had totally incredible morphing graphics - at aproximately 3:00 and the esplanade -

if anyone can point me in a direction where I might be able to contact these people and thank them or try and get some of their work - I would be very grateful.

thanks

TC

Is the space "tour" the one that had all the myths re-told of the constellations?
And in time we will all burn and become a new.

the guy who did that was the guy who did the big show at the planetarium in NYC. If you're ever in NYC I recommend checking it out.

that space dome project, the Bok Globule, was a collaboration between the Department of Tethered Aviation's Carter "Barbie" Emmart, Leo Villareal, Lvt Bhudda Dave Kennedy and the good kite folks who built the dome and made the lining for the projection. the projection and gear came from the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan where Barbie runs the Hayden planetarium.

i was blessed to have the opportunity to help them out a bit, and that tour blew my mind every time i saw it...which was over and over! you can find more info at http://www.dotarocks.net/ and a version of the software used for the presentation, which was developed with a grant from Isaac Asimov's widow, is available on the museum's website, but i have to tell you it ain't much without Barbie on the mike...

glad you enjoyed!

after reading Don's account i realize i should also say that Paperboy did a heroic job designing a pattern for the lining with the help of KaHottie, the three of us did most of the cutting with help from the Dragon Haus folks, and Dean "Paperboy" Jordan pretty much singlehandedly sewed that slippery fabric into a giant half of a beach ball to line the dome. KaHottie was the major flyer for the hang, as i understand, i was not on playa for that part...all of this, as Don pointed out, in the wake of the sudden death of their best friend, Leave it to Bhudda Dave Kennedy, the designer and fabricator of the dome itself.

to say that i helped with the project may be a gross overstatement on my part...really i was more of a witness. seeing the folks of DOTA pull together to make that project happen under those conditions is something that will inspire me for the rest of my days. i am grateful to be even a small, newbie part of that warmly incredible group of people. never have i encountered such an amazing group of folks, able to give space and love and support in the harshest of conditions, teach without speaking, and embody the spirit of the event in so many ways every day.

i know that's not really what you were asking about...but i guess i needed to set the record straight. or something (:
