Hey to Whomever, I'm a "newbie"... i lived in a community for a year after high school and the transition to "real" life has been hard ever since the experience. I just happened to happen upon the Burning Man website and have become thoroughly enthronged. My big concern is the logistics. I have no cause for concern on expectations I simply hate the word. I've done my "required reading" ... How do I get there, how much travel time do I need to allow, how far into my pocket is this venture gonna go, who can I tag along with for my first time?
Thanks,
Sophia Marie
Thanks,
Sophia Marie

It would probably be easiest to fly into reno and get a ride share from their to the playa.. San fransico airport is farther but you might be able to find someone or a group to ride up with. You may want to find a theme camp youd like to help out with or volunteer while you are out there. There is also someone who runs a hostel out of their home to help people get out ot the playa in reno.

From what I hear this will be limited--the guy's burned out on cleaning up after 100+ people.moonbeam327 wrote:IThere is also someone who runs a hostel out of their home to help people get out ot the playa in reno.

Akron, eh? I used to have a good friend from there. Welcome.
I'd find your local group and start doing things with them. There have got to be other burners in Akron or close by, folks who you can join forces with. Witha a little luck, these people can guide you in getting your shit together and you can help them realise some of their playa dreams. They'll also have the definitive scoop on travel time, etc.
What you bring will depend largely upon what vehicle you're using to get there. Think minimalist, except when it comes to water. If you're anything like me you'll end up tossing in plenty of costumes and moon shoes and stilts at the last minute anyway.
The ride there, and back, can be a lot of fun. Just remember that you'll be tired and stressed and cracked out, so leave time for sleep, for stops along the way. We lose too many burners pre and post event every year. And you have a long haul.
Look down the forum for 'regional' and see if anyone's posted for Akron. If not, post something. And check out the main BM page for info on regionals.
Congratulations, this is a good time to start your planning.

Sophia, since you love to dress up, here's a tip. Dressing up in the day tends to involve very few clothes, or something light to cover you up from the sun. It's really, really hot. Mostly. Dressing up at night involves a warm coat, warm clothes, layers, whatever. It's really cold at night. Mostly. Of course, it may differ for you. I didn't wear most of my dress up clothes because they weren't suitable for the weather...just so you don't lug a bunch of stuff you won't use.
