Principal Artist vs. Parent on the Playa?
hello, people of playa ~ i'm wondering if anyone out there combines parenting on the playa with heading up a theme camp or art project. i could use help/advice, beyond "join Kidsville", which i hope to do.
i've been Burning since 2000. i've been parenting since 2010. hopefully, 2017 will be the year i combine the two.
and i'd like to do my art project, Burning Tarot, which usually takes the form of a tiny theme camp... but i don't know how to make that happen. i have a partner/child's father but he's only been to Burning Man a couple times; it's not really his thing. my former collaborator in Burning Tarot was killed in a car accident with another Burner friend. last year, i didn't bring B Tarot to the playa at all, and just focused on building my friends a memorial in the Temple.
so i feel a bit ... at sea. any ideas?

I do not know too many regulars here on Eplaya with young children. Perhaps looking into the kidsville angle, ping their yahoo group or whatever they run these days, maybe Facebook?
Good luck.
Good luck.

I'm *really* hoping Kitty Rodriguez chimes-in here. She is a long-time burner, an amazing mother, and brings her kids to the burns with great success. Her husband is a longtime ESD volunteer. Just awesome folks. If anyone can give you some pointers, its her. I have no idea how they do it, but they do it RIGHT!

Reach out on Facebook and through your regionals. Closer in your geograph the better for in-person discussion. Each child is different.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the Building Camps & Villages board, since that's a better fit for a question about camp management. The 2017 event boards are intended more for announcing and posting updates on your projects for that year's event - feel free to post a thread for your Burning Tarot camp in the Camps & Villages board once you're ready.
I'm sorry to hear about the tragic accident. I hope the temple memorial provided some healing, and am glad to hear you'll be carrying on with your project.
What I'd recommend is looking up various kid-friendly camps (Kidsville is certainly a place to start, but there are probably plenty of others). Reach out to people in the camp and see if they can give you any tips or guidance. Good luck!

You can be a registered theme camp within a village, no problem. I have a small one in Hushville, with my interactivity, the village gives me preferred streetside placement. You certainly could contact Kidsville with this in mind, see if they would be interested in hosting your camp.

I'm sure it's different with a 7 year old, but when I took my 2 year old camping by myself it was difficult to even set up our tent while still keeping an eye on him and making sure he didn't wander off or pick up a snake or something. I think if I brought him to burning man or even a regional it would be 24/7 parent mode and that's about it.

Re: Principal Artist vs. Parent on the Playa?
I brought my 2 year old to BM in 2014, simple answer for that young is that it takes a village, we went with a group who were all able and willing to help out so my wife and I could get some non-parent time. You should have a little easier time with a slightly older child. Things we found:
It was awesome to have our son in an environment where we didn't always have to say, "no." we could let him climb on the furniture
Work out a code for when your kid isn't comfortable and maybe is afraid to speak up.
Don't assume they will be able to realize/tell you when they are tired, dehydrated, hot, etc. Plan on frequent down time/recharge breaks at set intervals and really pay attention so you can catch the meltdowns before they happen.
watch yourself and any co-parent. If you are also dehydrated/tired/hungry/etc you may be having a meltdown while your kid is, which is no fun if you don't realize what is happening.
Overall it was a great experience for the whole family and we are looking forward to kid #2 being old enough to communicate so we can head back to the playa with them both.

Not that I approve of this, but you could always go the Plug and Play route. There are plenty of BMORG-approved Playa Hotels these days, with full-service meals and art cars, trailers and maids.
If you're infant is hot enough, you might even be able to buy into White Privilege Ocean and you wouldn't be expected to clean up after yourself or your kid. Because paying other people to make you comfortable is the new Radical Self-Reliance.

The wandering off, on the other hand, was chronic and, for my parents I'm sure, exasperating.

[disclaimer: I am neither a parent, nor do I play one on TV]
My suggestion would be to take another year off your art, and to fully enjoy being at the event with your child. Simple as that. You can always bring your deck and do spontaneous readings while the kid is napping, but by freeing yourself of the double-duty you'll be freeing yourself to enjoy Burning Man. We always say the best way to get refreshed is to go with a birgin, what better birgin than a 7yo and their natural sense of wonder at the world?
