Cheap (albeit not free) Stuff

Okay, I'm a little concerned about posting this, but there's an annual fund raising sale that's like a warehouse sized garage sale in a few weeks.

I've been ~3 times and there's usually some good stuff. The sale is two days long, and i've only ever been one the second, half price day--so there may have been a lot of stuff go out the door that I wasn't even aware off. Not so good on bikes, or camping supplies, but definately kitchen stuff, a lot of clothes--by the time I'm done with other stuff I'm too tired to go through them, but there's probably something good there costume wise, some furniture, odd bits and pieces, toys (yes, Dr. Pyro, I'll do a Barbiescout), jewelry, bedding (got a great quilt for $3 one year) and all sorts of stuff to warm the heart of a scrounge.

Proceeds benefit the Oakland Museum--a fine institution with which I have no connections. A former art teacher of mine is part of the volenteer corp who puts in on. It's in the warehouse district of Oakland, off 880/the former 17/the Nimitz.

There is also a preview sale with paid admission.

Dang Jason, doesn't portland have the holy grail of used bookstores?

Maybe your local museums have fund raisers too. Ifound out about this by luck, you could contact them and ask.

We loves the precious rummage sales!

My mom, my sister and I went on the World's Longest rummage sale a couple of years ago! 500 miles of sales!!

This is an event that is not pushing a corporate logo or name but an institution of knowledge and I think anyone opposed to it is just taking out anger from their own shortcomings.

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry had a sale not that long ago but most of the items there were sold before the doors even opened. Very sad in my opinion. But we do have Powell's to which you are correct is one of the largest used bookstores. I need to start hitting up some flea markets soon.

Ya know, I'm okay with volenteers getting some priveledges for the hard work, and if hte Oakland museum finds that it raises extra money with the preview sale, yeah, they probably need all teh money they can get, but it is too bad if you go to one of these things and find yourself picking over freebox quality stuff. I mean, I'm okay if I go late in the day--that's my extra sleep, but to never even have agood chance. . .

Oh yes that could be great fun. Flea Market gift exchange could be interesting fun.

My older brother used to do something similar. He would drop lots of acid and hit up all the garage sales in the morning. He would grab friends to go along. Some of the shit he brought back was spectacular. He bought me one of my favorite classical pieces "Holst's The Planets" on vinyl.

i believe it's the jupiter theme that makes my toes tingle and my heart soar every time i see it or play it or hear it or think about it.

it's very visceral in a full-body sort of way. or maybe that's just from the standpoint of having played it....

I found a link with the Midi files and I am going to see what sort of fun I can have with it.

If I were to hear it played live I would be in tears the whole time. It is a wonderful album and the vinyl truly brings out the sound.

Got word of a fantastic rummage sale in Philidelphia on the first weekend in May (presume 7th and 8th, this year) at 22nd and Spruce.

For those of you who live within striking distance of an Utrecht Art Store and like to work with Rigid Wrap (aka that plaster bandage stuff that they used to make casts from) you're in luck. They are selling the wrap for 99cents a roll. A great deal, if you like the medium. I don't knwo if they are doing that on their web site.

We used to have a big church sale downtown every year, but alas, no more.....But I DID just get an ENTIRE Kirby vac with ALL the attachments AND a Lil' Chief Smoker at the fire department rummage in Cooper for five bucks.....I think it was Janka who was lamenting the shortage of jerky in Finland, and I'm gonna step up to the plate!

Oakland Tribune Article It's against my nature to go for the preview sale, but so I'll be there in march. Last year I noted that there are sewing machines and even some faux fur (it was beige and there were several yards) enough shot glasses to set up a large camp and bar (hey< I'm not sure but at least 40-50) some camping equipment--oldish, and all sorts of stuff thay may entertain. On Sunday afternoon, prices drop a lot--maybe to 10 cents on the dollar.
