Dear All,
as a first time burner I thought I should make my entry.
Not exactly sure whether or not this is for the millennial kid who sees this as a modern day Woodstock, the Goldman Sachs employee who wants to be "lit" or some hipster art director who is looking for a fresh tagline to put on their home-brewed beer - I thought I should leave my screaming kids with some underpaid babysitter and fly halfway across the globe with my better half to find out what this is all about.
Looking forward to hear from more experienced burners what made you go in the first place and why you are coming back and to hear other first timers what led them here.
Bless

Welcome Dan.................,
Glad to have you here on eplaya. Funny that you should ask the question about what and why people attend Burning Man. I think each person comes for a different reason. Some are very young and we have other participants in their 80's (or more).
Personally, I get the feel of a Woodstock type event, but others see it as a desert rave. For others it's a dusty camping trip and more think of it as a get-a-way from reality.
It seems that no two people have the same view of the event. The few things that are indisputable is the remote location and the extreme conditions.
I hope you take the time to read up on the First Timer's Guide and the Survival Guide in my signature below. You will find them very useful in your preparations.

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I am neither a Millennial nor a Finance Square nor a hipster art director . . . you don't have to be any of those things either. You will find there: techies and artists and graphic designers and baristas and secretaries and doctors and RNs and scientists and teachers and engineers, a lot of ex-military folks, contractors, truckers, stonemasons, roofers, and construction workers . . .DanfromLaaaandaaaan wrote:Dear All,

I attended the first time because a co-worker I barely knew said, "You should come to Burning Man". I hadn't camped since I was 13 and I wouldn't know anyone else there, so I remain surprised that I said yes.
All I knew of the event was that it was an eccentric camping trip with a bigger, sillier crowd than one would normally see. We prepared for 2 months with a small group and just went. I was physically prepared, but had no idea what I was in for culturally, and I'm glad of that.
(It would've put too much pressure on the event to be something specific.)
I come back because of the friendships I've made, as well as the art & dance, and the beauty & remoteness of the desert.
