Central California: Junkmail Man 7/16/05

Post by Buster Friendly » Sun Apr 24, 2005 12:28 pm

The Junkmail Man isn't an affiliated regional burn, but it's a Burning Event none the less. It happens over the weekend of July 16th at Pismo Beach. This will be our 5th anniversary of using the Oceano Dunes section of the beach to burn our artwork.

Each year, we camp together on the beach, bringing along our own saved junk mail, load it up into a giant effigy, and light it on fire. In previous years we've made a 3-story tall sculpture, this year we're making a burning hillfigure of a sleeping giant laid out over a sand dune.

Junkmail Man is pretty much like anything other burner-style camping trip, except it takes place on a State Beach, and everyone will be working together to create a flammable 250-foot Lite Brite figure.

There are no tickets for Junkmail Man other than the $10 overnight camping fees charges by the park, but all participants are required to bring their saved junkmail. About 200 campers came to the beach last year, there'll be 300 or so in our base camp this time around.

If you're interested in attending, please sign up for the Junkmail Man announce-only list by sending a subscribe email to junkmailmansucksdontgo(at)junkmailman.org

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here. They may eventually be answered.

I'd like to point out 3 things about this event;

1) Junkmail Man Sucks, Dont Go!

2) If your tent/whatever can handle the environment at Pismo then BM will be no problem.

3) Snowy Plover tastes good.

4) It was on fire when I got here.

5) DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?

6) There's no "fuck you" in team.

GOOD NEWS: The State Park's Department has granted us a special use permit for the Burning Hillfigure, so the big thing to do now is for people to make their camping reservations and bring their saved junkmail.

Reservations for the weekend of July 15-17th are now going very quickly. Camping permits sold out last year and will most likey do the same this time around, which means that if you wait until you get to the beach to buy yours you may get turned away at the beach entrance.

As you may already be aware, the base camp for the Junk Mail Burn is being relocated this year; down to the shoreline. While this will make it easier for people to get to the base camp by being able to stay on the wet sand while driving on the beach, each person attending still needs to make the effort to reserve their own overnight camping permits for the weekend.

Here's how:

Sign up with www.reserveamerica.com and search the availability of Oceano Dunes SVRA (NOT Oceano campground!) for the weekend of July 15th, and then click on "Book Now" to place your reservation.

OR

Call 1-800-444-7275, the Staff at Reserve America are friendly and
helpful. It takes about 7 minutes to buy your permit over the phone, if you have date and payment information ready for them.

The permits are $10 per night with a non-refundable $7.50 reservation fee. Some people arrive earlier in the week, some of us stay through Sunday night, but most make reservations for Friday and Saturday night.

Take note of your confirmation number. If you have provided an email address it will be sent to that address, too.

Save your Mail,
BF
