First-Timer BMer

Post by Scubapro » Mon May 02, 2005 6:50 pm

Hello Everyone,
This year will be my first time at BM and I am really looking forward to the experience.
About myself:
I work at a nuke plant as an armed security officer. We are pretty much trained in SWAT. There are fun aspects with the job, but for the most part it just pays the bills. I have a wide variety of interests and skills. I like computers, music (playing), outdoor activities and have recently started RVing.
My wife will be coming to BM as well. She works as a financial controller in the food service industry and we have been married for 12 wonderful years. I have 4 children from a previous marriage who are all grown up and on their own. Too old to have more. :(
I have many questions to ask in my planning for BM so I am all ears for suggestions.

Welcome, Scuba....Let me know if I can be of assistance. Especially if your planning involves blinky lights, domes or GOOP.

Are you bringing the RV? There are a ton of threads about RV's, some started by me (because I'm looking for a used one to buy). Check 'em out for some useful advice.

Other than that, have a great time.
It's what you make it.

My $0.02 worth;

1) go find the survival guide on the main site (if you haven't already) and read it cover-to-cover (at least twice). I think they still have a 2004 or 2003 copy, that's OK as not much changes year-to-year.

2) read as much of the Eplaya posts on topics that seem to apply to you - the archives from past years are helpful to look at also.

3) come back and ask questions (repeat often)

4) show up at BRC and find out that everything is different from what you anticipated & prepared for but have a great time none-the-less.

Phil and I started our own website about Burning Man after our first trip in 1996. We even have a page full of advice for First Timers. Check out
www.cieux.com/bm/bmtoc.html. That should get you started. Feel free to send me questions directly too!

Louise, your link gives me a 404 error. Here's one that works:

BTW, I love your website.

Thank you for over 7 years of eplaya memories. I have asked Emily Sparkle to delete my account and I am gone. Goodbye and Goodluck to all of you! I will miss you!

BM was a gas

Hello everyone,
Well I prepared and prepared for all possibilities. I was even prepared for the whiteouts. I would like to thank you for your input in making my first time easier. I can't begin to express my BM experience. People who have never been ask me how was it, and I am almost silent. I can't express it. I can only tell them you had to have been there. My wife and I are burners for sure. We already are starting our plans for next year. This is especialy true with self-expression. We looked so much like tourists this year. LOL. We were overwhelmed with sensory overload our first day out. It was pretty comical to look at us. I still have a chuckle over it.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you all for your help. See you at home next year.
